Chapter 2 — The Alpha Who Heard the Veil

846 Words
The forest was still trembling. Willow pressed her palm against the rough bark behind her, trying to steady her breathing. The whole clearing felt too quiet, too aware, as if every tree had turned to watch her. The symbol beneath her boots had faded again, still able to feel its magic. Catalyst… The whisper clung to her skin like frost. She wasn’t ready for this. She wasn’t ready for any of it. A branch snapped behind her. Willow spun, the shadows rising defensively. A tall figure stepped out from between the trees, golden eyes glowing like embers. His presence hit her like heat—wild, instinctive, unmistakably dangerous. The scent of pine and smoke rolled off him, grounding and overwhelming all at once. Kade Moonfang. Alpha of the Lunar Blood Pack. His jaw was tight, his posture alert, his gaze locked onto her with a mix of concern and something sharper—something territorial. “You’re hurt,” he said, voice low and rough. Willow shook her head. “I’m fine.” “You’re not.” He stepped closer, eyes scanning her like he could see beneath her skin. “Your magic just shook half the territory.” Willow swallowed. “I didn’t mean to.” Kade exhaled slowly. “I know.” But his tone carried more than understanding. It carried memory. “Kade…” she whispered. “Why are you here?” His gaze shifted to the ground where the symbol had been. “Because I felt you.” Willow’s pulse stumbled for a moment. “Felt me?” Kade nodded, jaw tightening. “Every wolf did. But I felt it first.” He looked away, as if the admission cost him something. “My lineage… it’s tied to the moon in ways most wolves don’t understand.” Willow’s breath caught. She had heard rumors about the Moonfang bloodline—stories whispered in the Umbra Sanctum’s archives. Stories of wolves born under eclipses, wolves whose instincts were sharper, whose magic ran deeper, whose destinies were never simple. Kade’s voice lowered. “My father used to say the Moonfang line was cursed. That we were born too close to the moon’s heart.” Willow’s chest tightened. “Cursed how?” Kade hesitated, then met her gaze. “We feel things we shouldn’t. We sense magic. We shouldn’t. We bond too deeply. Too fast.” Willow’s breath hitched. Bond. The word echoed through her like a tremor. Kade stepped closer, the heat of him brushing her arm. “When your surge hit, it wasn’t just power. It was emotion. Fear. Pain. Loneliness.” His voice softened. “It slammed into me like a tidal wave.” Willow’s throat tightened. “I didn’t mean to pull you into it.” “You didn’t.” His eyes soft, golden and warm. “My wolf went to you on instinct.” Willow looked away, her heart pounding. “I don’t want to hurt anyone.” “You didn’t hurt me.” His voice was quiet. “You called me.” Her breath caught. Kade’s expression shifted—something vulnerable flickering beneath the Alpha exterior. “My father died protecting our pack,” he said. “I became alpha too young. I’ve spent years trying to be strong enough for everyone.” His jaw clenched. “But when your surge hit… it was the first time I felt something that wasn’t duty.” Willow’s pulse hammered. “What did you feel?” Kade stepped closer, so close that she could feel the warmth radiating off him. “Connection.” The word settled between them like a living thing. Willow’s magic stirred, shadows curling around her ankles. Kade’s wolf responded instantly—his eyes brightening, his breath deepening, his posture shifting with instinctive protectiveness. “Kade…” Willow whispered, overwhelmed. “I don’t understand what’s happening.” “You don’t have to.” His voice was steady, grounding. “But you’re not alone in this.” Willow shook her head. “The Umbra Sanctum would disagree.” Kade’s expression hardened. “The Umbra Sanctum doesn’t get to decide your fate.” Willow swallowed. “They think I’m dangerous.” “They’re right.” Kade stepped closer, eyes burning. “But being dangerous isn’t always a curse.” Willow’s breath trembled. A sudden gust tore through the clearing, colder than before. Willow gasped as the symbol beneath her boots flared back to life. Burning brighter than before. More alive. Kade grabbed her arm, steadying her. The symbol pulsed. Catalyst… The same ancient whisper from before, rose from the forest. Willow’s knees buckled. Kade held her upright, his grip firm, grounding. The whisper came again, curling around her like smoke. Catalyst… the Veil calls for you… The symbol vanished. The forest fell silent. Kade didn’t let go. His voice was barely a breath. “Willow… whatever this is, whatever you are… I’m not leaving.” Willow stared at him, heart pounding, magic trembling. For the first time since she was fourteen, she didn’t feel alone. And that terrified her more than the surge.
