Chapter 10 — When Shadows Step Through

742 Words
They ran. Not blindly — Kade led with instinct, Lucian with precision, the envoy with speed — but the forest felt tighter with every step, as if Eclipsewood was trying to hold them in place. Willow’s pulse hammered. The cold was back, crawling under her skin, whispering along her spine. The Hollow born were awake. Watching. Waiting. Kade’s grip tightened around her hand. “Almost there.” Lucian’s voice was low. “No. They’re here.” Willow didn’t have to ask who. A ripple of shadow swept across the forest floor — not Hollow born, not magic, but witches. Figures stepped between the trees, cloaked in black, hoods drawn, sigils glowing faintly on their wrists. The Umbra Sanctum. Willow’s breath caught. “No…” Kade snarled, stepping in front of her. “Stay behind me.” Lucian moved to her other side, shadows rising like a living shield. “Do not speak to them.” The Sanctum’s leader stepped forward — tall, elegant, eyes sharp as obsidian. Her voice was calm, but it carried the weight of command. “Willow Ravenna,” she said. “You’ve been very difficult to find.” Willow’s stomach twisted. “I didn’t want to be found.” The leader smiled — cold, knowing. “Catalysts rarely do.” Kade growled. “She’s not going with you.” Lucian’s shadows grew taller. “You have no claim.” The Sanctum witches raised their hands in unison — not attacking, but preparing. “We have every claim. She is Sanctum-born. Veil-touched. Shadow-marked.” Willow flinched. “I’m not yours.” The leader’s gaze stiffened. “You woke the Veil. You belong to it. And you belong to us.” Kade stepped forward, wolf rising. “Back off.” Lucian’s voice dropped to a dangerous tone. “You’re trespassing.” The leader didn’t look at them. She looked at Willow. “You felt it, didn’t you?” she murmured. “The whisper. The hunger.” Willow’s breath trembled. “Stop.” “The Hollow born know your name.” “Stop.” “They want you.” “Stop.” The leader’s eyes gleamed. “And they will come.” Willow’s magic surged — sharp, cold, instinctive. A ripple of darkness tore through the air behind the Sanctum — silent, unnatural, wrong. The shadows thickened, twisting upward like smoke. The temperature dropped so fast Willow’s breath fogged. Lucian stiffened. “No…” Kade’s wolf snarled. “Not now.” The Sanctum leader turned, eyes widening. “Impossible.” The shadows convulsed. Then something stepped through. Not fully. Not physically. But enough. A Hollow born manifestation — a shape without form, a face without features, a hunger without body. It dragged itself out of the Veil like a nightmare learning how to breathe. Willow’s knees went weak. It whispered. Catalyst… The Sanctum witches recoiled. Kade roared, shifting halfway, claws ripping through his skin. Lucian’s shadows exploded outward, wrapping Willow in a cocoon of darkness. The Hollow born twisted toward her — not toward the witches, not toward Kade, not toward Lucian. Only her. Willow’s heart stopped. The Sanctum leader whispered, horrified, “It shouldn’t be able to breach.” Lucian’s voice was like ice. “It shouldn’t know her name.” Kade lunged, slashing at the manifestation — but his claws passed through it like smoke. The Hollow born whispered again. Catalyst… open… Willow screamed. Her magic surged intensely— moonlight and shadow colliding in a violent burst. The ground shook. Trees bent. The air cracked like lightning. The Hollow born recoiled, shrieking without sound, folding back into the Veil as if it burned. The Sanctum witches staggered. Kade caught Willow before she fell. Lucian’s shadows helped steady her. The envoy shifted back into human form, eyes wide. “What the hell was that?” Lucian answered, voice low and shaken. “A warning.” Kade held Willow close. “A message.” The Sanctum leader stared at Willow — not with anger, not with superiority, but with something Willow had never seen from her before. Fear. “You’ve changed the Veil,” she whispered. “And now it’s changing you.” Willow’s breath trembled. Kade’s voice was fierce. “We’re leaving.” Lucian nodded. “Now.” The Sanctum leader didn’t try to stop them. She only said one thing as they passed. “Catalyst… the Hollow born won’t wait much longer.” Willow didn’t look back. She couldn’t.
