Plan

The atmosphere in the subterranean strategy room of the Black family estate was suffocating. The heavy mahogany doors slammed open, and Victor walked in. The icy composure he usually wore was completely shattered. Blue ink from the pen he’d snapped earlier was still faintly smeared across his knuckles, but his eyes were pure, lethal steel. Standing around the central glass display table were his brothers, alongside his lead field operative, Mark, whose left arm was tightly bandaged where Valerie’s men had grazed him. "Give me a reason not to burn down every asset Valerie owns in this city by midnight," Victor said, his voice dropping into a low, terrifying register that cut through the room like a blade. "You burn them down now, and you burn her with them," Lucian said smoothly, leaning over the interactive map, his dark eyes hyper-focused on the real-time satellite feeds. "Valerie’s angry about the dock bust. Fifty million dollars in seized product means he's backed into a corner, and a desperate rat doesn't negotiate, he uses leverage." "She isn't leverage," Victor snapped, his hand coming down hard on the table. "She's my wife." "And an investigative journalist who blew his operation wide open," Julian added, resting his elbows on the back of a leather chair. His usual effortless smile was entirely gone, replaced by a sharp, calculating frown. "Valerie thinks she acted alone, or that she’s an FBI mole. He doesn't know she’s connected to you yet, Victor. The moment he connects the dots between Ruby Hart and Victor Black, her survival window shrinks to zero." Damian, restless as always, paced the perimeter of the room, absently spinning a sleek combat knife between his fingers before slamming the blade tip straight into the wooden edge of the table. "So why are we talking? Mark said they pulled her out of a wrecked car on 4th Avenue. That’s Valerie’s turf. Let’s take a strike team, break through the front doors, and rip his throat out." "Don't be stupid, Damian," Gabriel chimed in, stepping up beside Victor. Gabriel’s usual playful demeanor had evaporated; his jaw was tight. "If Mark couldn't stop them on an open street because of how organized they were, Valerie’s fortified. A loud breach gets Ruby killed before we even reach the basement." "Mark," Victor turned his piercing gaze toward his wounded operative. "What did you track before they cut your line?" Mark stood straight despite the pain, bringing up a encrypted route on the main screen. "The black SUV hit 4th Avenue, took a sharp left into the industrial district, and vanished from city traffic cams near the old abandoned meatpacking plant by the southern border. It’s insulated, sits right on his secondary escape route out of the city, and has sub-level access." Lucian nodded slowly, zooming in on the blueprint of the plant. "It makes sense. Soundproof walls, heavy concrete, easy to defend, and underground tunnels leading to the river if he needs to slip away. He’ll be keeping her in the basement level—isolated." Julian stepped closer to the display, tapping two access points. "If we hit the main gate, his guards will bottleneck us in the courtyard. We need a split entry. One team to draw their primary security force out, and a secondary breach team to go straight for the sub-level where Ruby is being held." Victor stared at the red marker flashing over the meatpacking plant, his grip tightening until his knuckles turned white. "Damian, Gabriel, you take the heavy unit to the front perimeter," Victor commanded, his voice carrying absolute authority. "Make enough noise that Valerie thinks the entire state militia is breaching the front gates. Pull every guard away from the sub-level." Damian grinned, a cold, predatory flash of teeth as he yanked his knife out of the table. "Gladly." "Lucian, cover the perimeter exits with snipers. If Valerie tries to slip out the back toward the river, drop him," Victor continued, pulling his suppressed firearm from his shoulder holster and racking the slide with a sharp, metallic click. "Julian and Mark are with me on the lower breach. We go in silent, clear the basement, and bring Ruby home." The four brothers looked at Victor, the shared, lethal focus of the Black family. Victor met the eyes of every man in the room, his voice dropping to a final, chilling whisper. "Valerie took the wrong woman. Make sure he doesn't live long enough to regret it." The damp air of the basement was thick with the smell of rust, mold, and stale iron. Valerie paced in front of the metal chair where Ruby was bound, his broad shoulders casting long, jagged shadows against the concrete wall. "You're running out of time, little reporter," Valerie rasped, leaning down until his sour breath hit her face. "Somebody gave you those dock codes. Somebody paid for a top-tier shadow to follow you around town. Tell me who's pulling your strings, or I start breaking fingers." Ruby tilted her chin up, forcing her hands to stay steady despite the sharp plastic zip-ties biting into her wrists. "I told you. I'm an investigative journalist. I dig until I find dirt, and you left a mountain of it." Before Valerie could respond, the floor beneath them violently shuddered. A deep, deafening explosion echoed from the upper levels, followed immediately by the heavy, rhythmic thrum of automatic gunfire and the shrieks of panicking guards. Dust rained down from the exposed ceiling pipes. Valerie snapped his head toward the reinforced door, his eyes widening. "What the hell was that?" "Sounds like someone's here for the main course," Ruby said, a small, cold spark of defiance rising in her chest. Downstairs, the sub-level hallway was pitch black. While Damian and Gabriel blew through the front gate with maximum noise and heavy firepower, drawing every guard in the complex up to the courtyard, Victor moved through the sub-level corridors like a phantom. Behind him, Julian moved with practiced, lethal efficiency, while Mark held their rear, his right arm steady on his sidearm despite the bandage soaked through his left sleeve. Two of Valerie’s guards rushed down the narrow stairs, weapons raised. Before they could raise an alarm, two silenced shots cracked through the dark. Both men dropped instantly. Victor stepped over them without breaking stride, his face carved out of pure stone, his dark eyes fixed entirely on the heavy iron door at the end of the hall. Inside the basement room, Valerie grabbed Ruby by the collar, hauling her out of the chair to use as a shield as he drew his sidearm, pointing it straight at the entrance. "Back off! Whoever you are, step back or she dies!" BANG. The heavy hinges blew inward off the iron door frame. Through the clearing smoke, Victor stepped into the room. He didn't look at Valerie. He didn't look at the gun pressed against Ruby's side. His dark gaze went straight to Ruby's eyes, checking the cut on her forehead, taking in her steady breathing, and registering the bruises on her wrists. "You're late," Ruby whispered, her voice tight but holding. "Traffic was heavy," Victor replied smoothly, his low, gravelly baritone cutting through the ringing silence of the basement. Valerie's jaw dropped as recognition finally hit him. "Victor Black? What the hell is a high-society billionaire doing here?" "You took my wife, Valerie," Victor said softly, stepping forward as Julian flanked the right wall, cutting off Valerie's only line of sight. "And you shot my man." "Stay back, Black! I swear to God I'll pull the trigger!" Valerie yelled, tightening his grip on Ruby. Victor didn't stop. He raised his suppressed pistol with single-handed precision, his grip rock-solid. "You made two mistakes tonight," Victor said, his dark eyes flashing with absolute ruin. "First, you thought she was acting alone. Second... you made her bleed."
