Chapter 20

644 Words
Sabrina got up on sleepy legs, grabbed the pile of random katanas, and went upstairs where Bri was already tucked into the bed. Sabrina put the swords down around the room before rubbing her eyes sleepily. She watched as the boys moved in two more beds before they blocked the door to the room with a dresser. Sabrina curled up on one of the beds they brought in and was out the moment her head hit the pillow, feeling grateful for the company of her friends and the safety of their makeshift fortress. She knew that no matter what happened, they were all in this together and that thought made her feel a little more at ease in a world that seemed to be constantly changing. Sabrina groaned, throwing her hand over her eyes as the sun shone into the windows of the master bedroom. She sat up, looking around her surroundings and not recognizing anything around her. She quickly gained her bearings as she realized she was alone in the room. Her friends weren’t there. She jumped up, grabbed the katana that had been laid next to her, and walked cautiously out of the room. She looked around the house, not finding her friends. Why would they leave her sleeping and all alone? That wasn’t safe. Where the hell were they? She thought After a good thirty minutes of looking around the whole house and garage, she decided to peek out the front window. She sighed in relief as her eyes finally found her three friends out in the street talking to what looked like other survivors. She slipped out the front door and walked up to them, listening To the conversation. "So how did you kids make it all the way here?” the adult with black hair asked "We escaped the school and came here, “ Jason said “Good for you guys. What's your next plan? We were in the city when it happened and came back here to see if it had also hit here. So far, you three are the first we have found out here. Our guess is everyone else turned or are stuck in the city,” The black-haired man said. The redhead standing next to him spoke up. “ What you gonna do with that sword girl?” he asked. Sabrina was caught off guard as everyone turned to her. She forgot about carrying the katana. She smiled sheepishly. “ Honestly, I forgot I was carrying it, “ she said. “I'm Sabrina, and you guys are?” she asked. “I'm Kane, and this is my partner, Chris,” the black-haired man said “They are my neighbors, “ Kyle explained to Sabrina “Ah,” she said. “ Sorry, I woke up confused; you all left me alone. I got scared,” she admitted. "You say we are the first you've seen out here?" she questioned. " Yall going door to door?' she asked curiously. Kane and Chris looked at one another before looking back at Sabrina. " No, your friends are the ones who came to our place," they said Sabrina turned her eyes to her friends. " Really?" she asked. " You couldn't have woken me up first?" she asked. "What if you got hurt? Or worse, infected," Sabrina asked. "S sorry, Sabrina, " Kyle stuttered. " Didn't think about that beforehand," he said softly. Sabrina rolled her eyes. " Well, it is a good idea," she said. "Just please, next time, let me know," she said, turning to Kane. " So, what are your plans? Where will you go?" she asked, even if you find other survivors. Kyle jumped in " Damn, Sabrina, why are you giving them the third degree? " "No, it's fine, Kyle," Chris said, looking at his partner before thinking of how to answer the girl.
