Chapter 3. The Rogue Attack

1106 Words
The golden glow from the pendant cast flickering shadows across the forest floor, illuminating Aria’s hesitant steps. Her heart pounded in her chest, the eerie silence of the woods pressing in on her like a shroud. Every fiber of her being screamed for her to turn back, but the pull of the pendant was relentless. It pulsed against her skin, its rhythm matching the rapid thrum of her heartbeat. A low growl broke the silence, sharp and guttural. Aria froze, her breath hitching as yellow eyes glinted in the shadows. The rogues emerged one by one, their matted fur bristling as they encircled her. These weren’t feral, aimless wolves. There was purpose in their movements, a cruel intelligence that sent a shiver down her spine. One rogue stepped forward, its voice rasping like gravel. “The key is hers.” Aria’s grip tightened on the pendant as panic surged through her veins. “Stay back!” she warned, her voice trembling. The rogue sneered. “Take her.” They lunged. Instinctively, Aria raised her arms, bracing for impact. The pendant flared, golden flames erupting from her palms and slamming into the nearest rogue. It yelped as the fire engulfed it, the scent of singed fur filling the air. The others hesitated, their growls faltering. But the fear in their eyes was mirrored in her own. “What’s happening to me?” Aria whispered, staring at the fire flickering in her trembling hands. One rogue bared its teeth. “She doesn’t even know.” The pack retreated into the shadows, their snarls echoing as they fled. The pendant’s glow dimmed, and Aria dropped to her knees, exhaustion crashing over her. Her body trembled, the heat lingering in her hands fading into a dull ache. What am I? Miles away, Caius sat in his study, his fingers gripping the edge of his desk as his wolf growled in his mind. She’s in danger. The weakened mate bond pulsed faintly, a sharp pain lancing through his chest. Caius shot to his feet, the chair toppling behind him. He didn’t question it—he shifted mid-stride, his massive black wolf form tearing through the forest. When he reached the clearing, the acrid scent of burnt fur and scorched earth filled his nostrils. He shifted back to his human form, scanning the area until he saw her. “Aria.” She lay crumpled on the ground, her face pale and her breaths shallow. The pendant around her neck pulsed faintly, its glow barely visible. Caius knelt beside her, his heart twisting at the sight of her trembling hands. “Damn it,” he muttered, scooping her into his arms. She stirred weakly, her eyes fluttering open. “Caius?” “Rest,” he said gruffly, though his voice softened as he held her closer. Her warmth, faint as it was, reassured him. Her head lolled against his chest, and she murmured something he couldn’t make out. He looked down at her, his wolf pacing in his mind, growling in frustration. You rejected her, and still you care. The healer’s hut was dimly lit, the scent of herbs and incense thick in the air. The elderly healer glanced up as Caius entered, her sharp eyes narrowing at the sight of Aria. “Lay her here,” she instructed, motioning to a cot. Caius set Aria down carefully, his gaze lingering on her pale face. “She’ll recover,” the healer said as her hands glowed faintly, examining Aria’s condition. “But her powers are awakening.” Caius straightened, his eyes narrowing. “What powers?” The healer glanced at the pendant, its faint glow pulsing steadily. “This is no ordinary wolf you’ve brought me, Alpha. She’s something more… something dangerous.” Caius’s jaw tightened. “If she’s a threat—” “She’s not the threat,” the healer interrupted, her voice sharp. “But the ones hunting her are.” She hesitated, her gaze flicking to Aria. “She’s a key. To what, I don’t know. But someone does—and they’re coming for her.” His wolf growled low in his mind, a warning rumbling through his thoughts. Aria’s eyes fluttered open, her body aching as the events of the attack flooded back. Her fingers twitched, the faint memory of flames igniting in her hands making her chest tighten. She sat up slowly, her gaze falling to the pendant resting against her chest. Its warmth comforted her, but it also filled her with questions she couldn’t answer. “Why did you save me?” She turned her head to find Caius standing near the door, his arms crossed over his broad chest. “You were unconscious in the middle of the forest,” he said flatly. “I couldn’t leave you there.” Aria scoffed, her voice laced with bitterness. “Funny. You didn’t seem to care much about me before.” Caius’s jaw clenched, his silver eyes narrowing. “This isn’t about the mate bond.” “Then what is it about?” she snapped, standing despite the ache in her legs. “Because I don’t know what’s happening to me, or why those rogues wanted me dead!” “The pendant,” Caius said after a beat, his voice low. “It’s not just jewelry, is it?” Aria touched the pendant protectively, her mind flashing back to the flames, to the vision of the fiery woman. “I don’t know what it is,” she admitted, her voice trembling. “But it’s the only thing I have left from my parents.” Before Caius could respond, Lyra burst into the hut, her face tight with frustration. “We’ve captured one of the rogues,” she said, her green eyes flicking between Caius and Aria. “You’ll want to hear what he has to say.” The rogue was chained in the pack’s holding cell, its matted fur slick with sweat. Lyra stood at Caius’s side, her expression grim as they approached. “Why did you attack her?” Caius demanded, his voice like a growl. The rogue sneered, baring its teeth. “She carries the key. Our master wants it.” Caius’s eyes darkened, his wolf snarling in his mind. “Who is your master?” The rogue’s laugh was low and guttural. “You’ll find out soon enough. When the Alpha falls, and the fire consumes you all.” Lyra glanced at Caius, her voice low. “The bond you rejected? It’s the only thing keeping her—and us—alive.” Caius didn’t respond, but his wolf growled softly, agreeing with her words.
