Chapter 5. The Witch’s Warning

1063 Words
The forest was alive with chaos. Aria’s flames danced wildly around her, golden tendrils licking at the air as if they had minds of their own. The rogues darted between the shadows, snarling and snapping, their movements calculated and deliberate. Sweat dripped down Aria’s temples as she struggled to keep her fire under control. The heat radiating from her hands was scorching, yet it didn’t hurt her. But her fear was suffocating. “What if I can’t stop it?” she whispered to herself, her breath shaky. The pendant’s pulse quickened, feeding her power. Her vision blurred at the edges, the fire’s glow turning everything else into a haze of orange and gold. “Aria, watch out!” Caius’s voice snapped her out of her thoughts. A rogue lunged at her from the side, its claws swiping dangerously close. She raised her hand instinctively, and flames exploded outward, slamming the rogue into a nearby tree. The impact sent ash and embers spiraling through the air. The sharp scent of smoke filled her nostrils, mingling with the acrid tang of burnt fur. Caius, in his massive wolf form, growled low and guttural as he barreled through another rogue. He shifted mid-attack, claws tearing into one before he turned to Aria, his silver eyes blazing. “Get it together!” he barked, his voice sharp. “You’re losing control!” “I’m trying!” Aria shot back, her voice cracking. The fire surged again, more forceful this time, the heat searing the air around her. Her chest tightened as a horrifying thought struck her. What if I hurt him? The flames flickered in response to her hesitation, and in that moment of weakness, the witch emerged. The air grew heavier, charged with an unnatural energy that made Aria’s skin prickle. Shadows twisted and warped as the witch stepped forward, her dark cloak trailing behind her like smoke. The witch’s magic crackled in the air, sharp and electric, sending a shiver down Aria’s spine. “Well, well,” the witch drawled, her voice low and mocking. “The little wolf who burns.” Aria stumbled back, her flames faltering. The witch’s presence was suffocating, her power like a vice around Aria’s chest. “You don’t even know what you are,” the witch hissed, her gaze sharp and unrelenting. She raised a hand, and tendrils of dark energy shot forward, coiling around Aria’s flames and extinguishing them. The sudden cold made Aria gasp, her hands trembling as the fire vanished. Caius growled, stepping in front of Aria. “Get behind me,” he ordered, his voice low and dangerous. But the witch only laughed, a sound that echoed like nails scraping against stone. “Do you think you can protect her, Alpha? From what she is?” The shadows around her writhed like living things, creeping closer. Her voice dropped, becoming almost intimate, as her gaze locked onto Aria. “You carry the blood of destruction,” she said, her tone like silk sliding over steel. “It will consume you. And he…” She gestured to Caius, her smile widening. “…he will destroy you before you destroy him.” The words hit like a physical blow, stealing the air from Aria’s lungs. “No,” she whispered, shaking her head. The witch’s laughter grew louder, her hands raising as she unleashed a wave of dark energy. It barreled toward them, the shadows twisting into jagged shapes. “Move!” Caius yelled, shoving Aria to the side. The pendant burned hotter against her chest, a surge of heat that reignited her flames. Without thinking, she thrust her hands forward, and a massive wall of fire erupted between them and the witch. The flames roared higher and hotter than ever before, consuming everything in their path. The ground beneath them blackened, the air thick with smoke and ash. When the fire finally subsided, the witch was gone. Only her laughter lingered, faint and haunting, echoing through the trees. The journey to Bloodstone territory was eerily quiet. Aria trailed behind Caius, her hands still trembling. The witch’s words echoed in her mind, each syllable sinking deeper into her thoughts. Blood of destruction… He will destroy you. She glanced at Caius’s broad shoulders, his stride steady and purposeful. He hadn’t spoken since the fight, his silence heavy with unspoken questions. When they reached the gates, the pack members who gathered to watch their arrival exchanged whispers and pointed glances. “An omega?” “What is she doing here?” “She’s no mate for an Alpha.” Aria’s jaw tightened, her shoulders squaring. She refused to let their words break her, but their judgment weighed heavily on her nonetheless. Caius turned abruptly, his silver eyes sharp as they landed on her. “Come with me.” She followed him into the main hall, her steps reluctant. “You’ll stay here,” he said curtly, gesturing to a small side room. “Of course,” she muttered, her voice dripping with sarcasm. “Wouldn’t want to taint your precious pack with my weak omega presence.” His jaw clenched, but he didn’t respond. Without another word, he turned and left, the door closing firmly behind him. That night, Aria sat by the small window in her room, the pendant cool against her chest. She stared at her hands, turning them over as if searching for answers in the lines of her palms. She closed her eyes and tried to summon the flames again. A faint flicker appeared, then vanished. Frustration bubbled up, and she slammed her fist against the windowsill. “What’s wrong with me?” The pendant pulsed, faint and steady. And then she heard it. “Aria…” Her head snapped up, her heart pounding. The voice was low, deep, and resonant, like a whisper carried on the wind. She turned toward the door, her steps hesitant. The voice came again, pulling her like a thread. “Aria, come.” She slipped out of the room and into the night, following the voice as it led her into the forest. At the edge of a clearing, she stopped, her breath hitching. A shadowy figure stood before her, its form flickering like smoke. “You’ve come,” it said, its voice a low rumble. “Good. It’s time you learned the truth about who you are.”
