Brielle’s POV The dress was still hanging from the back of Brielle’s bedroom door when she woke. For a moment she stayed beneath the blankets and stared at the garment bag as though it had appeared there on purpose to accuse her. Pale morning light slipped around the edges of the curtains, softening the room and catching on the edge of the hanger. The dress itself was hidden beneath the fabric cover, but that somehow made it worse. She knew exactly what waited inside it. The blue fabric. The silver embroidery. The way Grandma had looked at her in the mirror yesterday and smiled like she saw something Brielle wasn’t ready to see yet. Brielle rolled onto her back and covered her face with one hand. She was not thinking about the ball before breakfast. That was a terrible precedent.
