The Woman In The Photo

The Vow He Kept Chapter Five: The Woman In The Photo The headlights stayed still outside the window. Not moving closer. Not pulling away either. Just sitting there, like whoever was behind the wheel was deciding something. Ethan reached over and flipped off the last kitchen light, dropping them all into darkness again. Ethan: "Nobody move." Maya's heart pounded so hard she was sure everyone could hear it. She still had the photo clutched in her hand, the edges bending under her tight grip. The two young women stared up at her in black and white, frozen in a laugh from a night Maya knew nothing about. Claire: "It's a sedan. Dark color. I can't see the plates from here." Adrian: "Could be Voss. Could be nothing. A neighbor pulling in the wrong driveway." Claire: "At one in the morning? In this town? Nobody pulls into the wrong driveway here." The headlights finally moved. Slowly, the car rolled forward, past the café, and disappeared down the street. Nobody breathed until the sound of the engine faded completely. Maya's legs gave out, and she slid down against the kitchen counter, sitting flat on the cold floor. Maya: "I can't do this anymore tonight. I can't keep finding out my whole life was a lie every ten minutes." Adrian knelt down next to her, careful, like she might break if he moved too fast. Adrian: "I know. I'm sorry." Maya: "Don't apologize. Just tell me who's in that photo. Tell me the truth, all of it, right now." Claire pulled a chair over and sat across from them, the photo now resting on her knee. She studied it again in the dim light from her phone screen. Claire: "Her name is Elena. I met her twice, both times through your father, Adrian. Once at a fundraiser six years ago. Once outside his office, maybe two years after that. She never gave a last name. She always left before anyone could ask too many questions." Maya: "That's supposed to be my mom? The woman who died when I was six?" Claire: "I didn't know that's who she was until right now. I swear to you, Maya, I had no idea." Ethan crouched down near them, his voice quiet. Ethan: "Maybe it's not her. Maybe it's someone who just looks like her. People have doubles all the time." Maya shook her head slowly, staring at the photo like it might change if she looked hard enough. Maya: "No. I know her eyes. I don't remember much from before the accident, but I remember her eyes. This is her." Adrian took the photo gently from Claire's hand and looked at it under the phone light. His jaw tightened. Adrian: "There's something written on the back." He flipped it over. Faded pencil, barely readable, but there. E. — Stay hidden as long as you can. I'll keep her safe. — Rose Maya's breath caught. She grabbed the photo back and stared at those words until they blurred from the tears she'd been holding back all night. Maya: "My grandma helped her disappear. She helped my own mother disappear and let me believe she was dead." Adrian: "There has to be a reason, Maya. Your grandmother didn't do anything without a reason." Maya: "A reason doesn't make it hurt less." Claire's phone buzzed again on the counter. She grabbed it fast, already braced for another message from the unknown number. This one was different. A photo, not a text. It showed the same dark sedan from outside, parked now a few blocks away under a streetlight, engine still running. And behind the wheel, barely visible but unmistakable once you looked twice, sat a woman with the same eyes as the photo in Maya's hand. Maya: "That's her. That's the same woman." Claire: "She's here. Right now. Blocks away." Adrian stood up fast, pulling Maya to her feet with him. Adrian: "We need to go. Now, before Voss's people circle back." Maya: "Wait. If she's really my mom, if she's alive, I need to see her. I need to know." Adrian: "And if it's a trap? If Voss is using her to get to you?" Maya: "Then I still need to know." Ethan moved to the front window, peering carefully through the blinds at the empty street outside. Ethan: "Car's gone again. She's not staying in one place long. Like she doesn't want to be found either." Claire looked at Adrian, something unspoken passing between them, some old argument neither of them wanted to have in front of Maya. Claire: "We can't protect her and chase down a ghost from twenty years ago at the same time. We have to pick one." Adrian: "We're not leaving Maya's mother out there alone if she's really out there." Maya wiped her face with the back of her hand, steadying herself against the counter. Maya: "I'm not asking you to pick. I'm telling you I'm going to find her. With or without you." Before anyone could argue, Maya's phone buzzed in her jacket pocket. A text from a number she didn't recognize, sent only seconds ago. I've been watching from a distance for eighteen years, sweetheart. Meet me alone at the old dock at 3 a.m. Come without them, or I disappear again. Maya looked up at Adrian, her hands trembling around the phone. Maya: "She wants to meet me. Alone."
