The Vow He Kept

Chapter One: Maya had closed this café a thousand times. But tonight felt different. It felt heavy, like something bad was coming. She was on her knees behind the office desk, looking for her dropped keys. Her hand hit a loose floorboard. Under it was an envelope. It was old and yellow, like it had been there for years. She saw her grandma's handwriting on the front. For Maya. Open only when Adrian Cole returns. Maya froze. Her heart started beating fast. Her grandma died three years ago. Back then, Adrian Cole was already famous. He was a billionaire. His face was on magazines. He had nothing to do with a small café like this. So how did her grandma know? How did she know, years ago, that this exact man would come back? Maya stared at the envelope. She thought about waiting, like the letter said. Her grandma always told her, "Some promises matter more than being curious." But this wasn't just curiosity anymore. This was her whole life. She opened it. Inside was a letter and an old brass key on a ribbon. She read the letter. Her hands got cold with every line. Then she read this part, and her whole body went still. Trust him. But don't trust everyone around him. Someone close to Adrian has been waiting for this day longer than you have. Someone banged on the front door. Hard. Maya shoved the letter and key in her jacket pocket. She walked to the door, her heart pounding. Through the glass stood a man she had only seen in pictures. But he didn't look like his pictures right now. No driver. No bodyguard. Just Adrian Cole, alone, breathing hard like he had been running. She opened the door. Maya: "It's almost midnight." Adrian: "Did you find it?" His eyes locked on her face. Maya's hand moved to her pocket without thinking. Maya: "Find what?" Adrian: "The envelope." She didn't say anything. That was enough of an answer. Adrian's face changed. He looked like a man who had been scared of this moment for a long time, and now it was here. Adrian: "Then we're already too late." Maya: "Too late for what?" He never got to answer. Across town, in a tall glass building, a woman named Claire Whitfield stood by a window. She had a phone to her ear. Below her, the city lights blurred together. Claire: "He's not answering. Two hours now." Voice on the phone: "He's at the café." Claire's hand tightened around her phone. Claire: "Tonight? Why tonight?" Voice on the phone: "The girl found something. We need to know what it is." Claire shut her eyes. She had worked for Adrian for twelve years. Twelve years building the version of him that the world got to see. Nothing had prepared her for this. Claire: "If she has the key, this ends the way we always said it would." Voice on the phone: "And if Adrian tries to protect her?" Claire watched a plane blink slowly across the dark sky. Claire: "Then he becomes a problem too." Back at the café, the lights went out. All at once. The room went black. Only the streetlights outside gave a little light. Somewhere behind the counter, glass broke. Maya felt it in her chest. Maya: "Who's there?" No answer. Just footsteps. Slow. Coming closer. That was worse than someone running at them. Adrian stepped in front of Maya before she even saw him move. Adrian: "Stay behind me." Another crash. Closer now. Then a flashlight beam cut through the dark and hit Maya right in the face. A voice came through the dark. It sounded fake, like someone was using a machine to hide it. Unknown Voice: "Give us the key. And no one gets hurt." Maya's blood went cold. She hadn't told anyone about the key. Not a friend. Not a stranger. Not even the man standing next to her, who she felt go stiff at those words. For the first time, Adrian looked scared. But not for himself. He leaned in close and whispered. Adrian: "Listen to me carefully." Maya: "Who are they?" He didn't answer that. Instead he said something that scared her even more. Adrian: "They've been watching you for years." The flashlight jerked sideways. A shadow lunged out of the dark, reaching for Maya's hand where the key was. Then a second voice yelled from the doorway. It was young. It sounded scared. And it made Adrian go pale. Ethan: "Adrian — don't let her open that door!" But it was too late. The door behind Maya was already swinging open.
