Chapter 6: Crossfire and Confessions

352 Words
The deafening pop of suppression rounds echoed off the hollow concrete walls of the abandoned terminal. Through the spiderwebbed cracks of the shattered windshield, Elena watched Dante move. He wasn't just a syndicate boss giving orders from a secure room; he was a lethal force of nature. Every step he took was calculated, his dark coat billowing slightly as he returned fire with absolute, cold precision. Two hostile enforcers crumpled near the loading docks before they even realized their cover had been compromised. Inside the armored cabin, the air grew thick with the metallic tang of smoke and leaked coolant. Elena pressed her back against the leather seat, her fingers clenched so tightly into her palms that her nails dug into her skin. She had spent her entire life trying to stay invisible, keeping her head down in the lower districts, far away from the brutal power struggles of the upper elite. Now, she was sitting dead center in the crosshairs of a civil war. The passenger door wrenched open with a metallic shriek, breaking her train of thought. Lorenzo stood there, his tactical vest dusted with concrete powder, his expression grim as he pointed a gloved hand toward the rear exit hatch. Lorenzo Get out. Now. The terminal's lower utility tunnels are our only clean egress before the perimeter completely collapses. Move! Elena (Scrambling across the seats, her voice laced with defensive defiance) Where is Dante? I'm not running blindly into some rat hole without him! Lorenzo (Grabbing her arm firmly to guide her out of the wreckage) The boss is finishing the sweep. He gave a direct order to get you underground before the clean-up squad arrives. Trust me, Ms. Elena—if you stay here, you become a target he has to protect instead of a weapon he can use. Before she could argue further, Lorenzo hauled her out of the vehicle and shoved her through a reinforced maintenance hatch leading down into the subterranean utility grid. The heavy steel door slammed shut behind them, cutting off the deafening roar of gunfire and plunging them into humid, echoing darkness.
