THE NEST LOCK

CHAPTER 19: Darius kept his promise. After the Blood Moon Feast, after I ate raw elk that he fed me with his own hands while a thousand Lycans watched and my father pretended not to be jealous, after Magnus Vale was marked and sent to tell the world the White Queen had returned, after Kael was left kneeling on the lower ledge in the red moonlight — Darius picked me up from the throne and flew. He didn't ask. He didn't say goodbye to the feast. He just spread his black wings, wrapped them around me and our son's white glow, and shot straight up through the Blood Moon, so fast the feast below became a red smear. "Where—" I clutched his neck, laughing, my white wings flapping uselessly in his grip. "My tower. Our nest. Three days," he growled against my double-marked neck, his fangs grazing but not biting. "I let them see you long enough. I let them scent the pup. Now you are mine again. Only mine." He smashed through the upper ice doors for the third time that week — my father would have to fix them again — and the black ice reformed instantly behind us, but this time it didn't just reform. It thickened. A foot thick. Then two feet. Then five feet of solid black ice sealing the entire tower from the inside. The Nest Lock. Lycan Kings only do it once, when their Queen is newly double-marked and newly pregnant and every male on the mountain has scented her. They seal the tower so no one — not warriors, not Alphas, not even White Kings — can get in. Outside, I heard my father's white fire hit the ice doors and fizzle. "DARIUS NOCTURNE! YOU CANNOT LOCK MY DAUGHTER FOR THREE DAYS! SHE NEEDS MOONWATER! SHE NEEDS—" "She has me!" Darius roared back through five feet of ice, his voice vibrating the whole tower. "She has meat! She has moonwater! She has my purr! She does not need you for three days, White King!" Aeron's fist hit the ice again. "Elara! Starling! Are you safe?" I giggled from the nest, buried in furs, my white fire dress torn again because Darius had ripped it climbing in. "I'm safe, Papa!" I called, my voice muffled by furs and black wings. "He's just... possessive!" "POSSESSIVE? HE'S FERAL!" my father shouted, but I could hear my mother Lira laughing behind him. "Lira! Tell your daughter this is not normal Lycan behavior!" "Darius, honey, maybe let them bring moonwater?" my mother called sweetly. "NO!" Darius snapped, and pulled his black wing tighter around our nest, sealing us in a second dome inside the sealed tower. Inside the dome, it was warm, dark, and smelled only like him and me and silver dust. He finally looked down at me, his storm-grey eyes completely black again, his fangs out, his chest bare, my white bite glowing on his shoulder, his black crescent glowing white in time with my belly. "Three days," he whispered, his forehead pressed to mine, his hand sliding over my belly where our son pulsed. "No one touches you. No one scents you. No one sees your wings but me. For three days, you learn why Lycan Kings purr." I had heard Lycan Kings purr before — when he laid his head on my belly the first night. But that was a sleepy purr, a protective purr. This purr was different. He laid me back into the center of the nest he had built from 200 years of furs, his black wings still wrapped around us, and laid his head on my belly again, but this time his mouth was open, his fangs grazing the thin white fire dress over where our son glowed. The purr started deep in his chest, so deep the furs vibrated. Then it moved — through his throat, through his lips, through his fangs, into my belly. White fire and black fire met. Our son's tiny white light flared so bright it lit up the entire black wing dome, and for the first time, I felt him move. Not a kick. A flutter. A tiny wing flutter inside me, white and black, just like the flicker at the feast. "Darius!" I gasped, my hands flying to my belly, my white wings snapping open and wrapping around his head, pulling him closer. "I feel him," Darius whispered, his eyes wide, silver tears tracking down his scarred cheeks again. "Little Luna, I feel our son. He has wings already. He is purring back." And he was. A tiny, tiny purr, so small it was barely a vibration, answering Darius's earthquake purr. I started crying, silver dust tears that floated like stars inside our wing dome. "200 years," Darius whispered, his forehead pressed to my belly, his purr vibrating through both of us. "200 years I thought I would die alone in this tower, with claw marks on the walls and no Queen to oil my wings. And now— now you are here, double-marked, carrying my son who purrs—" He moved up, his hands cupping my face, his thumbs wiping my silver tears, his own silver tears falling onto my double mark. "Stay," he begged again, like he had on the night Selene announced the pup. But this time it wasn't a King begging a Queen to stay safe. It was a male who had been alone for 200 years begging his mate to never leave the nest. "Where would I go?" I whispered, my white wings wrapping around his black wings, silver dust raining onto his black hair. "You sealed the tower with five feet of ice. My father can't even get in." He laughed, a real laugh that broke into a purr again, and pulled me under him, into the furs, into the center of the nest, his black wings sealing us so completely that the outside world — my father shouting, Kael kneeling, Magnus spreading the word, a thousand Lycans feasting under a Blood Moon — disappeared. For three days, the tower stayed sealed. No one entered. No one left. Lycan warriors guarded the lower ledge, white fire from my father guarded the upper doors, and inside, a Black King purred over his White Queen and their White King heir, teaching him how to purr before he was even born. On the morning of the fourth day, when the ice finally melted and the doors opened, Darius carried me out again, but this time my belly was rounder, my double mark was darker, and the tiny white light inside me pulsed with two fires — white and black — and purred. And the entire mountain knelt again, because they could hear it. Their future King, purring inside his mother.
