THE MARKING NIGHT

CHAPTER 14: The purr woke me, not the cold. I was still in the nest, sunk so deep in midnight furs that I couldn't see the black ice walls anymore. Only the dome of black wings above me, and silver dust floating like stars inside it. My mother's humming was gone. My father's white wings were gone from the doorway. The fire pit burned black and silver, low now. Only Darius was left. He was still exactly where he had fallen asleep — his head on my belly, his massive arms locked around my hips, his black wings wrapped around the entire nest, sealing us in a world that was only us and the tiny white light pulsing under his cheek. Our son. I shifted, and my wings, which had been oiled and wrapped around my own stomach in my sleep, fluttered weakly. The bald patches were gone. The silver dust was bright again. Darius's eyes snapped open instantly. Black, then storm-grey, then black again. "Little Luna," his voice was rough from sleep and rut, his cheek still pressed to my belly. "You woke. Does it hurt?" I shook my head, my hand finding his hair — black, thick, tangled from nesting. "No. It feels... warm. He feels warm." His hand slid up from my hips to cover mine over our pup. The white fire there pulsed stronger, as if recognizing both our touches at once. Selene had left a silk dress at the edge of the nest. White, thin, smelling of moonlight. Someone — my mother — had changed me into it while I slept. Darius stared at it, at the thin straps, at the way it clung to my belly, and his jaw clenched. Two hundred years of control, trying to hold. "You should rest," he whispered, but he didn't move his head. His breath was hot through the silk. "The healers said White Queens eat themselves alive to grow a Lycan pup. You need meat. You need—" "I need you to stop looking at me like I'm going to break," I whispered back. His eyes flashed to mine. For nineteen years, every male who looked at me saw wolfless. Weak. Easy to discard. Kael had looked at me like I was a burden. Darius looked at me like I was a miracle he was terrified to touch too hard. I sat up slowly, my wings rustling, and the nest shifted around us. I cupped his scarred face, the face that had been alone for 200 years. "You waited 200 years for me," I said, my voice small but steady. "And I waited nineteen years to be seen. Not as wolfless. As yours." Something in him broke. His hands came up, tangling in my hair, in my wings, pulling me down to him, not to my belly this time — to his mouth. His kiss was reverent and desperate at once, his fangs grazing but not biting, his tongue asking permission that his rut was screaming to take. I kissed him back. And my white wings, on their own, snapped open inside his black dome and wrapped around him — around his shoulders, around his back, cocooning the King who had cocooned me. He groaned into my mouth, his whole body shuddering as my silver dust rained onto his black wings, making them glow. "Elara— little Luna, if you wrap me like that while you're carrying my pup, I won't— I can't be gentle—" "Then don't be," I whispered against his lips, my forehead to his. "Mark me properly, Darius. Not to save my life. To keep me." He stared at me, his black eyes eating the starlight. Then he lowered me back into the furs, into the center of the nest he had built from 200 years of saved furs, his black wings sealing us completely from the world, from the war, from my father guarding the door outside. His mouth found the side of my neck, where his faint silver mark from the cottage had already turned black and silver, and he pressed his lips there, his fangs resting, his purr vibrating through my skin straight to the tiny white light in my belly that was now pulsing wildly, in time with both our hearts. "My Queen," he whispered, his voice no longer King, just mate. "My White Queen. My son's mother. Mine." I felt my own fangs — small, new, White Queen fangs I didn't know I had — lengthen in answer, aching to mark him back. Outside the black wing dome, the mountain was silent. No one dared breathe near the nesting King and his pregnant Queen. Inside, under black wings and white wings tangled together, Darius finally claimed what the Goddess had made for him, and I finally bit the mate who had waited 200 years to be bitten back. The black crescent on his chest and the white fire in my belly flared at the same second, binding three heartbeats into one. And on the balcony above, my father Aeron smiled for the first time in nineteen years, and spread his white wings to guard his daughter's marking night.
