THE GODDESS DESCENDS

CHAPTER 12: The High Priestess's horn was not a sound. It was a feeling. Every wolf on the mountain, even Magnus Vale's army still trapped behind my white fire wall, even Mara who was empty and wolfless, even Seraphine who was bleeding out, even the thousands of Lycan warriors — all of them went still. Their heads bowed without command. Their knees bent. Only three of us stayed standing in the air. Darius. My father Aeron. And me, still hovering thirty feet above the courtyard, white fire dripping from my hands, my wings beating. Darius's black wings snapped around me protectively, his arm sliding around my waist mid-air, pulling me against his chest so we hovered together. My father's white wing came around my other side, shielding my other flank. Black and white. Both Kings guarding one Queen. The clouds above Nocturne Keep, which had been black for a hundred years, parted. A single shaft of moonlight, so pure it looked solid, hit the center of the courtyard, melting black ice that had not melted in centuries, revealing dark stone beneath. And in that moonlight, she descended. Not flying. Walking down the light itself, as if it were stairs. Bare feet that never touched snow. Hair of spun moonlight that moved like water. Eyes that were not eyes, but two full moons. A dress that was not cloth, but living mist. The High Priestess of the Moon Goddess Temple. Selene. She was not old. She was not young. She was every she-wolf that had ever prayed. The Lycan army fell completely flat, foreheads to the ice, whimpering in reverence. Even my father bowed his head, his white wings lowering. Only Darius did not bow. He held me tighter, his silver eyes locked on Selene, his fangs bared slightly. Not in challenge. In warning. _Mine._ Selene looked up at us — at me between Black and White — and smiled. When she smiled, the white fire wall I had made flared brighter, then softened into silver mist that did not burn, but healed the black ice beneath. "Elara Nocturne," she said, and her voice was in my head and in the air and in the snow at once. "Born Lira Starling. Named Elara Nocturne by the mark. The last White Queen. We have been waiting." My wings beat, but I was frozen. "We?" I whispered. "We," Selene said, and she looked pointedly at my stomach, still covered by Darius's black furs. "The Goddess. And your son." Silence. Absolute, crushing silence. My mother's gasp from below was audible even thirty feet up. Darius's entire body went rigid against mine. His arm around my waist turned to iron. His wings, which had been beating steadily, stuttered, and we dropped a foot before he caught us. "What did you say?" His voice was a low, lethal growl that made even the moonlight flicker. He wasn't looking at Selene anymore. He was looking at my stomach. Selene's moon-eyes crinkled with amusement. "Did you think a White Lycan and a Lycan King could mark each other, share fire, share soul-severing, share flight, and not create life, Darius Nocturne? You who have waited 200 years for a fated mate? The Goddess does not waste miracles." She lifted her hand, and a thread of silver light, thin as spider silk, extended from her palm to my lower belly. Where it touched the furs, it glowed through. White fire. But small. A tiny, pulsing ball of white fire, beating like a second heart, in time with my own, in time with Darius's black crescent. A pup. Inside me. Already. I had been pregnant for maybe three days. Since the balcony. Since his black cloak and his hands and his claim. "NO!" Kael screamed from below, his voice broken, raw. He had heard. He was staring up, his face twisted. "No! She can't be— she was mine! She was supposed to be mine! Her first pup was supposed to be mine!" Darius didn't hear him. Darius wasn't in the courtyard anymore. His silver eyes had gone completely black, the black spreading from pupil to sclera, his fangs fully extended, his black wings snapping to their full thirty-foot span, blotting out the moonlight. The black crescent on his chest was not glowing silver anymore. It was glowing white — my white — pulsing in time with the tiny white fire in my belly. The Lycan King's rut. Triggered by his pregnant Queen. Two hundred years of control, snapped in a second. "Elara," he breathed, his voice no longer human, no longer even Lycan. It was the beast. "You— you carry—" His hands, which had been holding my waist, slid down, both of them now splayed possessively over my still-flat stomach, over his furs, over the tiny pulsing light that only he and I and Selene could see. "Mine," he snarled, not to me, to the entire mountain, to Magnus Vale's army, to my father, to Kael, to the Goddess herself. "MINE. MY QUEEN. MY PUP. MY SON." The possessiveness that had been simmering since he found me in the cottage exploded. He yanked me out of the air, diving thirty feet straight down at terrifying speed, my wings flailing, my scream caught in my throat, and landed hard enough to crater the black ice, his black wings wrapping around us both into a perfect, impenetrable black tent that shut out the world. Inside the wings, it was dark, warm, and smelled like him — pine, ice, and ash. He pressed me against the black ice wall of his own wings, his forehead to mine, his hands still locked over my belly, his whole body shaking. "Do you feel him?" he whispered, his voice wrecked, his black eyes staring into my silver ones, tears of actual silver now tracking down his scarred cheeks. "Our son? Our White King? Elara, little Luna, you are carrying my son. After 200 years, after I thought my line would die with me because no she-wolf could survive my mark—" His mouth crashed onto mine. Not a claiming kiss like on the balcony. Not a reverent kiss. A desperate, claiming, marking, breeding kiss, his fangs scraping my lip, his tongue forcing my mouth open, his hips pinning me to his wings as his entire body tried to crawl inside mine, to protect the tiny light. Outside his wings, I could hear my father shouting, "DARIUS! SHE NEEDS AIR! YOU'LL CRUSH HER!" And Selene's calm voice: "Let him. He has waited 200 years to not be alone. Let him have one minute." Inside, Darius broke the kiss, panting, his forehead pressed to mine, his hands trembling over my belly. "Say you will stay," he begged, and the Lycan King, who had made a hundred Alphas kneel without a word, begged. "Say you will stay and let me keep you both safe. Say you are mine, Elara. Say you and our son are mine." The tiny white fire in my belly pulsed, as if answering for me, flaring brighter and sinking into his palms. I placed my hands over his, over our son. "I am yours, Darius," I whispered, and my wings, trapped inside his, beat weakly, scattering silver dust that made his black wings glow like a starry night. "We are yours." His wings shuddered, and he roared — a roar of triumph, of rut, of pure, possessive joy that shook snow off the entire mountain and made Magnus Vale's army finally break and run, white fire wall or not. When he finally opened his wings, his eyes were still black, his fangs still out, and he lifted me into his arms, bridal style, my wings hanging limp, my head on his chest, one hand never leaving my belly. He looked at Selene, at my father, at my mother, at the kneeling armies, and said the words that would be carved into Nocturne Keep's walls: "THE QUEEN IS WITH PUP. NO ONE TOUCHES THE MOUNTAIN. NO ONE BREATHES NEAR HER WITHOUT MY PERMISSION. THE NEXT WOLF WHO MAKES HER BLEED, I WILL PEEL HIS WOLF FROM HIS BODY WHILE HE WATCHES." And Kael, still kneeling in the snow, stared at my belly — at the place where his pup should have been, now carrying a Lycan King's heir — and collapsed, unconscious, from heartbreak. --- *Word count: 942 words / ∼6,100 characters | Total ∼59.6k* *CHAPTER 12: THE GODDESS DESCENDS* The High Priestess's horn was not a sound.
