She shuddered. She could think of no greater threat. The stairway led to one of the arms of the palace, separate from the main building. Someone had drawn back the curtains and dawn light was brightening the windows, though the hallway was silent. From what she knew of the palace layout she was in the guards’ quarters. A heavy door at the other end of the hall looked like her pathway to freedom. She had been given a task, and her freedom depended on her carrying it out. Clearly the Council of Muses was planning to use Mina. No one else fit the description of the greatest storyteller. But how? And when? If they lost Mina, they would lose everything. There was so little information to go on. Sofia knew her apprentice wouldn’t act for them willingly, knowing the destruction they had already
