Lucas.
I forced myself to stay calm. Otherwise, Dr. Theo would already be lying in a coffin by now.
But this wasn’t the right time.
Besides, it was painfully obvious that Ms. Althea still loved him. And if anything happened to that man, I was certain she would hate me for the rest of her life.
The moment I saw her walking out of the door, I immediately strode toward her. From the corner of my eye, I caught Dr. Theo staring at us.
Good.
I wanted him to watch.
Even just this once, I wanted him to feel even a fraction of the anger I’d been suppressing for so long.
As soon as I reached Ms. Althea, I wrapped my arm around her and gently kissed her hair in greeting.
“Congratulations,” I whispered near her ear, my lips curling into a mocking smile as I glanced at Dr. Theo.
“Thank you, Dr. Smith,” she said warmly. “Come on, you might be late for your surgery. Isn’t it at three this afternoon?”
“It is,” I replied, “but we still have an hour. That gives us enough time to eat first.”
“Sure,” she answered with a smile.
Without hesitation, I took her hand, and together, we deliberately walked past Dr. Theo.
I leaned slightly closer to him as we passed.
“This is only the beginning of our revenge against you and your wife, Nervana,” I whispered coldly before stepping inside the elevator with Althea.
The moment we got into the car, I turned my attention back to her.
“When are you planning to start work, Ms. Althea?”
“Soon,” she answered softly. “There are just a few things I need to settle down first.”
“Can I ask what those are?”
She stared quietly outside the window for a moment before answering.
“The things Dr. George gave me… I’m returning them to him.”
“Do you want me to come with you?”
She shook her head.
“No. I won’t stay long anyway. I want to completely erase him from my life.” Her voice softened slightly. “He already has a wife now… and they’re about to have a child. Whatever we had before, I need to erase it from both my heart and mind. Now that I’m back here, I don’t want anything distracting me anymore… especially anything connected to them.”
I glanced at her briefly before nodding.
“Good. That’s the best decision you can make if you want to focus on your work.” I paused before reminding her, “Don’t forget the goal we both share.”
A faint smile appeared on her lips.
“I haven’t forgotten, Dr. Smith. Oh, and after we eat, I’m heading to the mall. I need to buy clothes for work.”
“You’re shopping today?”
She looked at me curiously. “Why?”
“Do it tomorrow instead. After you return Dr. George’s things, I’ll take you shopping by myself.”
“Won’t I just be bothering you?”
I chuckled softly.
“Of course not. Like I always tell you…” I briefly looked at her before smiling. “I’ll always be behind you, supporting you.”
Her expression softened.
“Thank you again, Dr. Smith.”
“You really need to stop thanking me,” I said teasingly before giving her a wink. “Once is enough.”
The moment we stepped inside the restaurant, a wave of cool air welcomed us, carrying with it the rich aroma of freshly cooked food. The place was lively, filled with soft conversations and clinking glasses, yet Ms. Althea remained unusually quiet.
She stared at the menu in her hands, but I could tell she wasn’t really reading it.
Her mind was somewhere far away.
“What do you want to order?” I asked, leaning back against my chair while watching her carefully.
“Anything is fine,” she answered absentmindedly.
I let out a small sigh and shook my head.
“You need to stop saying ‘anything.’ You should eat properly.”
That earned a faint smile from her.
“Then you decide.”
So I did.
As we waited for our food, I caught her drifting into silence several times, her eyes clouded with thoughts she couldn’t seem to escape.
Even without asking, I already knew who occupied her mind.
“Are you still thinking about him?” I asked bluntly.
She froze for a moment.
Then slowly lowered her gaze.
After a few seconds of silence, she gave a small nod.
“I don’t understand why it still hurts this much,” she admitted softly, almost like she was talking to herself. “No matter how hard I try to forget everything about us… the moment I see him, it all comes back.”
There was pain in her voice.
The kind of pain that never truly leaves.
I quietly exhaled and looked away for a second.
“It’s hard to forget someone you genuinely loved,” I said honestly. “But one day… you’ll get tired of being the only one hurting.”
She looked at me then, forcing a fragile smile onto her lips.
“I hope so.”
For some reason, seeing that smile only made my chest feel heavier.
After we finished eating, I drove her home before heading straight to the hospital for my surgery.
The Next Day
Ms. Althea sat quietly inside the car, both arms wrapped tightly around the box resting on her lap.
Inside were all the things Dr. Theo had once given her… expensive jewelry, handwritten notes, and even the small music box she used to listen to every night before falling asleep.
Memories.
Pieces of a love she was desperately trying to bury.
The car slowly stopped in front of the George Mansion.
For a few seconds, neither of us spoke.
I glanced at her and noticed how tightly she was clutching the box, as though letting go of it meant finally letting go of the person tied to every memory inside it.
“Are you sure you want to do this?” I asked quietly.
She lowered her eyes to the box before tightening her grip on it even more.
Then she slowly nodded.
“I need to do this.”
And after such a long time… I finally saw it in her eyes.
The determination to end everything connected to her past.
No hesitation.
Not lingering hope.
But painful acceptance.
The moment our car stopped in front of the George Mansion, one of the guards immediately approached us. I stayed silent and allowed Ms. Althea to speak for herself.
“Dr. Theo no longer stays here,” the guard explained politely. “Ever since he got married, he and his wife have been living in their new mansion.”
For a moment, the atmosphere inside the car turned heavy.
I glanced at Ms. Althea and noticed how her fingers tightened around the box on her lap.
Even now… it still hurts her.
“Umm… Guard. Can I ask a favor?” she asked softly, though I could hear the slight tremble in her voice.
The guard immediately nodded with a kind smile.
“Of course, Ms. Althea. Just tell me what you need.”
Slowly, she handed him the box.
“Please give this to Dr. Theo George.”
“Sure, Ms. Althea,” he replied respectfully as he carefully accepted it.
After that, silence followed once again.
Ms. Althea’s gaze slowly lifted toward the towering gates of the mansion.
And for a brief second… I saw everything reflected in her eyes.
The memories.
The Heartbreak.
The love she was desperately forcing herself to bury.
But she said nothing.
No tears.
No bitterness.
Just quiet pain.
“Thank you,” she whispered before getting back inside the car.
I started the engine and slowly drove away from the mansion. But neither of us noticed… At the exact moment we exited the gates, another car arrived.
I slowed down a short distance away and slightly rolled down the window.
I wanted her to hear this herself.
Moments later, the guard approached Dr. Theo while carrying the box.
“Guard,” Theo asked with a frown, “Why was Ms. Althea here? And what’s that?”
“Dr Theo…” the guard answered carefully. “Ms. Althea asked me to give this to you.”
Theo’s eyes briefly landed on the box. Then, without even opening it, he spoke indifferently.
“Put it in the compartment. Thank you.”
“Yes, Dr Theo.”
A cold smile almost formed on my lips.
So that’s it?
After everything… that’s all?
I was about to drive away when Dr. Theo suddenly looked in our direction. His eyes instantly narrowed when he saw Ms. Althea sitting in the passenger seat.
But the moment he realized I was the one driving… his entire expression darkened.
Almost immediately, he stepped out of the car.
“Wait!” he shouted loudly.
But he was too late.
Our car had already passed through the gates and sped away from the mansion.
I glanced at the rearview mirror and saw him standing there, helplessly watching us disappear. And deep inside, something cold stirred within me.
This is only the beginning, Dr. Theo George.
And when the day finally comes that your real memories return… when you uncover every single thing your wife Nervana did to Ms. Althea… I’ll make sure the regret destroys you completely.
