He backed out and used the rear stairs, looping round to the hall. He saw a lab assistant emerging from another set of toilets and hurried over. “Is Hana in there?” he demanded, blocking her path. She shook her head and narrowed her eyes in suspicion. “Sorry, no. I just got here.” People swarmed everywhere. Bodies poured through doorways until the school heaved, then still more arrived. The school’s success proved to be Logan’s personal nightmare. A bell sounded, a single quick, deafening blast which cut across voices and the sound of shuffling feet. The effect resembled the pulling of a sink plug. Crowds swirled and dispersed, filing into the hall and outside on cue, heading to whichever talk they travelled to hear. Logan held his breath, searching for Hana in the constant movement. As
