Hana Du Rose is forty-five, newly married and unexpectedly pregnant to her English teacher husband, Logan. As she deals with the problems in her married life, she is forced to contend with the constant threat of a conman who preys on widows for their wealth. An old lady’s last will and testament, with the potential to overthrow the crook’s claim on her estate, has somehow ended up in Hana’s possession and makes her the subject of his interest. Hana and Logan become deeply embroiled in the mystery, forced to go to extraordinary lengths to live their lives in safety. But Hana’s rebellious spirit constantly puts her in danger.
Her own adult children are struggling to accept her secret marriage to Logan, amidst serious problems of their own and Hana tries desperately to fit in with the fickle, feud-ridden Du Rose whanau. Logan’s mysterious past and secret life hinder his future with Hana and he finds himself the subject of a criminal investigation. An event at the secondary school they both work at means that things come to a dangerous head as the doors are thrown open to the public and Hana becomes immediately vulnerable.
