Chapter 19 Hana’s sleep offered no rest. She jumped awake at every creak and groan of the old house. Peering through the window in the early hours, she spotted light in the canopy high above the house and feared a bush fire. The orange glimmer looked distant and she fumbled for her phone. In the darkness she missed it and the handset skittered down the back of her bedside cabinet with a clunk. Hana groaned. “b****y marvellous!” More awake than before, she checked the flickering light again and abandoned her attempt to mobilise the local volunteer fire service. “Oh what the heck,” she grumbled. “I’ll burn in my bed if it gets out of control.
