I took a nice long shower, much to Amber’s dismay. She was chomping at the bit when I got out, dying from a lack of information. I will admit that it was kind of messed up of me to wind her up like I did, but what can I say? I sat down and told Amber everything from Monroe picking me up for the party to arriving back home this morning. Now, I sip on my coffee as Amber sits, stunned by everything I told her. “So… so wait…” I place my mug back down and wait for Amber’s mind to catch up. “Deon basically kidnapped you and your parents knew?!” I sigh and shake my head. That part of everything is still a little foggy, but I’m going to go off of what it seems like. “I guess so. They didn’t confirm or deny anything. All I know is that Mom had my purse, and she didn’t seem really surprised that I had disappeared like that.” A little voice in my head tells me that they for sure knew about this and even helped pull it off. The rest of me is fighting against that because I don’t want to believe that my parents would do something like that to me. I don’t want to believe they would try to force my hand like that. “And she said that she found it?” I nod, and Amber shakes her head. “I know that your relationship with your parents has been strained lately, but that’s some next-level sh.it.” I take another sip from my mug, trying not to let the depth of my emotions pull me under. “And Deon said that you agreed to go talk to him? He claims that you agreed to wait for him in the suite?” I nod again. “There were guards at the door, Amber. I know they heard me banging on the door to be let out. I don’t want to think about what would have happened if Monroe hadn’t sent people to save me.” “Let’s talk about him for a minute. Monroe Jensen? Like what the f***k, Jaylene? We’ve always known him as Monroe Rivers. Let’s not even mention the fact that he has, what, army men working for him or something?!” “I don’t know about army men, but definitely some type of security detail. Oh, and his house if enormous. Well, his mansion, I guess.” “Sh.it!” Amber starts typing away on her phone, and her gasps shake me out of my thoughts. “Monroe is not who he was in high school, that’s for sure. He’s the founder and CEO of Lenetronics.” I close my eyes at the familiarity of that name. “Oh, that’s that company that came out of England. He’s the founder of that?” Amber nods her head excitedly. I sit back in my seat and let my mind wander. I would have never guessed that Monroe was a man of such influence, but I have to wonder why he decided to keep it to himself. “Girl, he’s worth a sh.it load of money!” I shake my head. “It doesn’t matter. Money doesn’t speak to who he is as a person.” Amber looks at me with her eyes three sizes bigger than normal. “Ok, but hear me out. He’s worth 1.4 billion dollars, and that’s without factoring in the company.” That was the wrong time to take a drink of my coffee because I choked the moment she recited the amount. I quickly pull a napkin and wipe my face and neck. “Maybe you need to go back there and give him a different good morning.” Amber does a little shimmy, and I can’t help but laugh. “Stop it! I would never be with anyone just because they have money. If that’s the case, I should have just stayed with Deon.” “True and we all know what a disater that would have been.” We both get quiet, each lost in their own thoughts. Amber jumps up and runs out of the room. She comes back with my phone in her hand. “I just turned it back on.” The moment it connects, alert after alert fills the room. I’m not even surprised there are so many messages. “Damn girl, you’re super popular right now.” “I’m not popular at all. Dad is pissed that I said what I said to Mom. They are probably both concerned with who I left the party with. Mom is trying to salvage her image with me, though nothing she does will save it. Deon is being his usual possessive self and I’m not interested.” I take the phone from Amber and flip through my messages. I have a ton of texts from Mom, Dad, and Deon. I have a slew of missed calls, resulting in matching voicemails. I sigh and let the phone drop to the table. It doesn’t take long for the screen to light up with a phone call. Amber looks at the screen and then looks at me with a gleam in her eye. “Ppppuuuuuuhhhhhlease let me answer that!” I look at the screen to see that it’s Deon calling. I roll my eyes and shrug my shoulders. At this point, I don’t care enough to address him at all. Amber does a little happy dance in her chair and connects the call. She puts the call on speaker and makes sure it is between both of us. “Jaylene! Why haven’t you been answer my calls?!” I sigh and roll my eyes. “Why have you been calling me at all? I thought I made myself clear last night.” “I’m not interested in playing games with you. You’ve had your fun, now it’s time to come home!” “Home?! What the hell is that supposed to mean?” “What are you doing with that Jensen guy? I have enough money for the both of us. You don’t have to wh.ore yourself out with that guy.” “f***k YOU, DEON!” I disconnect the call and block his number. I swear, I feel as angry as they always depict dragons, smoke coming out of their nostrils and whatnot. “Damn! Was he like that back in high school?” I look at Amber and try to swallow down my most immediate feelings. “Something like that and when I realized it, I walked away. He still hasn’t gotten over that.” “He makes it sound as if you belong to him or something. What’s that about?” “I don’t know and I don’t care. I’m just glad he doesn’t know where I live.” “What about work?” I close my eyes, not wanting to face that fact. He knows where I work, and I can’t have any issues at work. I can already imagine how fast they will want to terminate my employment if this follows me into the building. That being said, I really don’t know what to do to keep that from happening. I can only hope that things don’t go that far.
