Chapter 5 The Address

1049 Words
The hotel location was the first thing that came to my mind when I woke up early the next morning. Every effort to shake it off failed. “I'm not going,”. I said to myself. “Going where”. I jumped out of bed, frightened. “When did you come back last night?” I had no idea what time Nathaniel had come back home, and instead of him replying to my question, he made his way to the bathroom. “Make me my breakfast," he ordered. “What would you love to eat?” I asked. He looked at me and I could tell in his facial expression he was irritated by the question. I had to think of what he wouldn't reject. I dashed off to the kitchen to cook something he might be pleased with. I flipped the pancake without really paying attention to it, my mind was still stuck with the text I received last night. The smell of the butter filled my nose, but it did little to lift the heaviness in my chest. Once the pancakes were done, I stacked them on a plate and poured maple syrup over them. I watched the syrup run down the sides in slow streams. I made breakfast for Nathaniel every morning, hoping that one day, he would hold my hands and see me as the woman he met years back, but every morning ended the same way. Little sentences, distant emotions. Still, I kept trying. Maybe because I was foolish. Maybe because a part of me still couldn't believe his love for me could never fade. I carried the waffles to the dining table, and met Nathaniel, who was sitting there waiting. “Isn't the syrup too much?” he asked. “Am sorry” He kept eating, he kept checking his phone every minute as if he would get scolded if he left it for too long. A notification sound broke the silence. My eyes drifted to Nathaniel as I watched his hands moving swiftly across his phone. “Could it be her?” The question crossed my mind before I could stop it. I was eager to know who he was chatting with, that made him so distracted from his food. “Was it your business associates?” I asked. He gave me a confused look, as if I had no right to know who it was. Chloe came out of the guest room, still in her night gown, her eyes still swollen, I could tell she had just woken up. “Good morning Nathan.” She greeted him. “Morning Chloe, when did you come around?” He asked, his attention still on his phone. “ Yesterday morning." Nathaniel turned his head, his attention shifted towards me. “Why didn't you tell me Chloe was coming?” he asked. I tried to lie that I wasn't aware. I tried to lie. She had surprised me without informing me. There was something about the way he looked at me, it got me much more scared. “Am sorry, I didn't mean to. You came home late.” He looked back at his phone. “You should calm down, Nathan. She was too excited to see me, and she forgot to tell you”. Nathaniel banged the table hard angrily and moved to where Chloe was. “This is my house, and I am talking to my wife.” I doubted if I was still his wife. I saw myself more like a servant. Chloe was bewildered. She had never seen Nathaniel like that. “Are you good?” she asked. Nathaniel stormed out of the house angrily without a reply. I should have told him, I shouldn't have gotten him angry. I kept blaming myself. “Brittany, are you sure Nathan is fine?” Chloe asked. “Yes, he is. He is just stressed from work. “Are you sure?” She asked again. She wanted reassurance everything was fine. It was 5pm on Tuesday evening. Chloe had gone to have fun with a few of her friends. They had organized a welcome back party for her. I was alone by myself, and the thought of the hotel kept coming to my mind. “I trust Nathaniel so much, he would never hurt me intentionally. I know he is stressed from work. That's the reason for his actions. “ I kept making excuses for him, and foolishly telling myself I was the one to blame. It was almost 7pm, I braced myself up, went to my closet and changed into a hoodie and black pants. I refused my driver to drive me and ordered a cab. I walked into the hotel and barely spared a glance at the marble floors or the crystal chandelier hanging overhead. Places like this had long stopped impressing me. The lobby buzzed with quiet conversation as guests moved in and out. Staff members greeted people politely, while the scent of fresh flowers filled the air. Everything was flawless, just as one would expect from a five-star hotel. For the first time in a long while, I feel underdressed. People walked past in tailored suits and elegant dresses. I told the receptionist I was waiting for my partner who was coming to make a reservation. She directed me to a corner to sit, not far from where the reception was. I sat there for a while and nothing seemed out of the ordinary. Nathaniel entered the hotel and went to the receptionist. “I knew it was just work, he was stressed from work,” I said to myself. I took my backpack and was prepared to go back home, then the lady entered. She hugged him from behind. It was not a friendship hug and neither was it a business-related hug, but I still told myself maybe she was just being playful around him as a friend. He held her around her waist, brushing a strand of hair away from her face as though they belonged there. The world around me faded into silence. Then Demian spoke. “There is something I need to tell you.” Before I could hear another world, someone grabbed my arm from behind. “Mrs Kings.” I froze…
