31 Tristan I downed another drink in two gulps. It burned down my throat and helped numb the pain. I thrummed my fingers on the shiny maple bar to get the attractive bartender’s attention for a refill, but she ignored me. There was once a time when no pretty girl had the strength or desire to ignore me, but those days were long gone. Once my injured knee knocked me off the professional track for football––or any other sport––my life took a sharp downward turn. My parents offered to pay for the rest of my college education when I lost my football scholarship, but I couldn’t drum up the energy to go to my classes.
