5 My on-top-of-the-world feeling didn’t last too long. As soon as we were out of sight of the ice cream shop’s picture window, Lexi let go of my hand. I immediately missed the tingling warmth of her touch. “Thanks for coming with me,” she smiled up at me. I tried to keep my voice normal, but it still sounded too high when I responded, “Of course.” We had spent loads of time together, but never really alone. The monumental importance of this moment hammered in my chest. She found an empty, shady bench that looked out over the glassy water for us to sit on.
