Aubrey

Aubrey POV Aubrey peeked out of her window for what could've been the tenth time that day. Despite it only being 8 in the morning and the fact that she still needed to go through her entire skincare routine, she couldn't help it. Her house was a gorgeous two-story located on the edge of her pack's private forest, and it belonged to her father, the Beta of the Moonrise Pack. And because her room was facing east, Aubrey had clear sight of whoever got in or out of the trail leading to the Moonrise Lake, a ceremonial site and also a great place to bathe and gather when the weather was nice. On that particular morning, a group of weirdos from her school was reunited right at the entrance of the trail, whispering and giggling amongst themselves like a bunch of teenagers - which Aubrey found odd to say the least, since they were all on the edge of their 18's like herself. Peeking through the glass one last time, Aubrey felt the direct gaze of the weirdest of them all - an omega called Finn, who had long jet-black hair falling in front of his face and wore baggy sweaters that had been worn out a long time ago. A little outraged by the audacity - after all, she was the daughter of a Beta - Aubrey closed the curtains and went on with the skincare routine, getting ready for school at once. "Aubrey, are you ready yet? We have to go!" her twin brother Emil shouted from downstairs. "I won't leave Jason waiting!" Jason was the Alpha's son, and he and Aubrey were school sweethearts. The entire school knew that they would be mates once both of them turned 18. Emil, Aubrey's brother, was going to be his Beta, and the three of them got along very nicely. "Sorry", Aubrey said in a hush while stopping at the table for a quick bite. "Those weirdos are at it again". "I don't know why you pay them so much attention, Abby", her brother said with a mouthful of bread. "They're just omegas. Soon enough, they'll be baring their necks for you and Jason and you can ask them directly". "You're right", Aubrey replied. While she agreed with her brother, she also got very strange vibes from Finn and his friends going into the forest so early in the morning, and with such regularity. For over three weeks now, Aubrey had seen them go in the direction of Moonrise Lake every day at the same time, and once even tried to follow them - but upon arriving there, there was nothing to be seen. She wondered where they went, but the idea of a high-ranker like herself worrying about mere affairs of omegas was just too much, so she just brushed it off. "Come on", her brother said, grabbing a jacket and another piece of bread. "Jason's here already". Emil hadn't even finished his sentence when they heard a car honking outside. With a smile, Aubrey went on to the arms of her boyfriend. With a huge build and well defined muscles, Jason was the perfect image of an Alpha, even at 17. A strong jaw drew the line for his solid but delicate features, caring almond eyes and a stunning, confident smile. Grabbing Aubrey by her waist, they kissed like they hadn't seen each other for a long time even though it was just yesterday, while Emil faked a gag on the other side of the car. "Come on, you guys", he said. "Leave the spectacle for school." Jason smiled at her when their lips parted. "I'd never leave this girl hanging, Emil." "What a sweetheart", Emil replied while looking up with impatience. "Come on, I wanna see my own girl before class starts!" "Fine, you lousy Beta", Jason poked him in the ribs while opening the backseat door for Aubrey. "Let's go, babe." --- Aubrey didn't care much about school. It was important that she was knowledgeable enough because she aspired to be a Luna, of course, because no pack would have place for an illiterate, let alone a dumb Luna. However, she would much rather focus on securing her status, as well as taking care of her appearance and having fun while she wasn't totally grown up yet. Rather, she saw school as an opportunity to build her social network and develop important skills for the position she knew it was hers to fill. That was precisely the reason why she didn't say anything when her brother and her boyfriend stopped in the middle of the hallway to confront the group of weirdos she saw earlier. Upon hearing the story, Jason had a good laugh and was now teasing them in front of everyone. "What's up with your clothes anyway?", Jason asked one small girl with a sarcastic smirk on his face. "Do you enjoy coming to school covered in moss and leaves?" "Maybe she belongs in the woods, afterall", a girl in their group shouted. The weirdos had their eyes fixed on the floor, not daring to disrespect the sons and daughters of their leaders. Finn, however, muttered something under his breath. "Say that again, you little freak?", Emil poked him on the side, making the smaller boy stumble backwards. "Don't you want to share it with the whole group?" "Yeah, let's hear what the little omega has to say!" Their group started to gang up on Finn, who seemed to be retracting on his sweaters with a hint of regret in his eyes. Aubrey found it pathetic. How was it that this omega even dared to look at her in the eyes in the morning, and now cowered before them like a cockroach? She stepped in - something she wouldn't usually do. But the little boy in front of her, who was surprisingly the same age as the rest of them, was driving her mad. And everyone stepped aside. "Come on, Finn" she snorted in his direction, feeling him tremble. "Not the same when you're in my territory, huh? So you have the guts to peek at some girl's window from the safety of the woods, but won't dare to look anyone in the eyes in here?" Finn looked up and their eyes met. For a moment Aubrey thought the omega was on cocaine, but the blackness in his stare was a mixture between his eye color, dark as a lake under the new moon, and the fear that made his pupils wide like two black pits. "You're a sorry excuse of a wolf. All of you" she gestured to the group, which flinched away like she was poisonous ivy. "If I were you, I'd be gone after the Age Ceremony to spare this pack of the embarassement of having such cowards as our omegas." She turned on her heels and started walking away, being followed by the stunned eyes of her friends. They reached her and didn't ask a thing, and as they kept walking she wondered if she was too harsh on them. But no - she had a status to keep, and even if it was too harsh, it was needed. Only then would her pack, the pack she would one day lead, grow stronger and stronger. Sometimes, she caught herself wanting to go to the forest, too; that primal urge that enticed her to go run naked in the woods, feel the cold water of the lake in her skin, bathe under the bright light of the Moon Goddess. But this life wasn't for her. She loved Emil and loved Jason, and couldn't let them, as the future Beta and Alpha, down. No. Those weaklings were something this pack didn't need, and they had to be put in their place. And she would do her job, as her fate as Luna commanded.
