Back To Life

Jessica Carson opened her eyes at the sound of her alarm clock. She reached out and grabbed her phone on the nightstand to check the date only for a smile to appear on her face. It worked. She wasn't dreaming after all. In her previous life, she had died, but she was given a second change to live by God. At first she didn't believe it, but now she certainly did. When she arrived at the gates of Heaven, she was told that she had the chance to live again thanks to her pureness and kindness to everyone. Only that now she wasn't planning to be her same old self ever again. She grabbed her phone once again, seeing that her "boyfriend," Karter Lee, was calling her again after 3 failed attempts. "I've been calling you for the past 15 minutes! Why weren't you picking up?!" An angry voice echoed from the other side of the call." "Didn't feel like it." Jessica simply replied, making Karter even angrier. "Didn't feel like it? That's all you have to say?" After she didn't reply, he continued, "Why did you threaten Scarlett again?" "I didn't, but it's your choice whether to believe it or not." She shrugged in real life. "Now, if you don't have anything else to say than your usual morning lecturing, please, do not bother me again." "Are you serious right now! If you talk to me, your boyfriend, like this no wonder why you behave like this with your own sister. Why can't you just be friends with her like you used to, and stop causing trouble for all of us?" "I don't have to behave like you all want me to. It's not like you or Scarlett will ever change your attitude towards me or something. If you called me just to say that, then better hang up. I have better things to do than talk with someone like you." She replied calmly, making him lose his temper. He was stunned for a moment, not expecting her to say all of this. "I- seriously?! Whatever! You don't even deserve to be called the true heiress of the Carson family!" He spoke again, his anger clearly showing on his voice. "I'm glad." She said before hanging up right on his face. Ever since returning to her biological family, they have always favored her adopted sister, Scarlett, who also happened to be her best friend since kindergarten. Apparently, when she was born, someone kidn*pped her and sold her to another family. Fortunately, the people were kind enough to provide her with shelter, food, clothes, and love for all these years she was gone. Karter's parents were friends with hers, so that's how they met. She really loved her foster parents as if they were her actual family, even though she knew they weren't. One day, a few years before she encountered her biological family, she had gotten a call from the hospital saying they died on a car accident. At this time, Scarlett was there to comfort her and help her get over it. She had first met Scarlett and her other best friend, Flora Levine, at kindergarten, where they became best friends for years. They were literally inseparable and used to hang out every single day. Together, they went through sad, hard, and happy times, but that was until the very moment they found out the truth about who Jessica truly was. After that, only Flora didn't abandon her. After a while of thinking, she decided to call Flora. "Hey, girl! What's up?" "Hi, Flora! I was wondering if you wanted to hang out and grab a coffee, maybe." "Sure! It's been a while since we last hung out!" "Great! Get ready, and I'm coming over at your place." "'Kay, see you there!" Jessica hung up the call and got up from her bed to get dressed. Right after she opened her door, she saw her brother, David, standing there, probably to scold her like everybody else did every day. Seeing her all dressed up, he raised an eyebrow and asked, "Where do you think you're going?" "I don't think that's any of your concern." She replied coldly and tried to walk away, which made David Taken aback, not expecting his own sister to react this way. "Of course it is. You're my sister, after all." He said, cutting her way off. "Oh really?" She turned to look at him. "I don't think siblings act this way with each other." "Well then, let me tell you that if you were a little nicer with Scarlett, we could act like siblings with each other!" She then mocked him, "Well then, let me tell you that if I have to be nice with Scarlett for you to accept me as your family member," she paused and glared at him, "then so be it." She lightly pushed him out of her way and left the mansion, leaving him there stunned as she had never acted this way before. He frowned and made his way downstairs to complain to his parents. "What was that yelling I heard?" His mother, Claire, asked as she took a sip of her usual morning tea. "Jessica, causing trouble again." "That girl will never learn her lesson." She rolled her eyes and continued, "I should have hired a manner teacher for her, in case she learns something, but that would probably be a waste of money and time." "Indeed." His second brother, Benjamin, agreed. "Even though she's the true heiress of our family, she has no right to act like that with us." "We can't do anything about it instead of enduring it. I am grateful your father agreed on not revealing her relationship with us to the world, or else everyone would make fun of us." With Jessica She had just arrived at Flora's house, and after seeing her best friend, she parked the car in front of her, allowing her to get in. "Hey, shall we go now?" "Yes, we still have to catch up so much. I had even started to think that you forgot about me." She pouted at Jessica. She was not wrong, though. Because she wanted to make her family accept her, she tried to take care of them as much as she could. She would sometimes cook for them or look after her brothers whenever they were sick. But all of her efforts had now gone to waste as they didn't appreciate any of it. She had considered leaving the family for a while now, and she was actually serious about it. "I know, I'm sorry." She couldn't help but chuckle at her childish behavior. "But from now on, I promise we'll hang out more often." "How come? I thought you wanted make up with Scarlett and with your family or something." Her face was now displaying a rather intrigued expression. "I don't care about them anymore. Since they don't appreciate it, let them be it." She shrugged her shoulders and thought about how oblivious she had been all these years. "Really?" Flora's eyes were now sparkling. "That's the spirit!" Flora was always a person who didn't try to pursue others who didn't seem a bit interested in her. She would simply exchange a few greeting with them but not further than that. She tried to convince Jessica not to waste her time with them, but she apparently didn't listen. She always wanted a family. She believed in them, people supported and loved each other. That was because of the love of her frosted family. That was how she thought her biological family would be, too. Not only they didn't support her, but they also didn't love her. What kind of foul had I been, believing I could change them? Jessica thought to herself. "Here we are!" She snapped out of her thoughts as they reached the cafe they planned to hang out. "Today, I'm going to make it the best day of your life, Jessica! It's gonna be so much fun! I've already planned everything!" They both knew that wasn't possible, but why ruin the happy mood they have right now? It was going to end when she would be going back to her house. Or maybe she didn't even have to return anymore. She could just make a phone call and everything would be solved. She wanted to see how Scarlett would react at seeing this thought. "You didn't have to! Hanging eith you is already much fun anyway." They both laughed and prepared themselves for the rest of the day, and maybe night.
