Following the tragedies surrounding the Battle of Brick Lane, the outrages of the so-called Jack the Ripper murders, and the subsequent bulldozing of large parts of London's East End, all vampires residing within Great Britain were enthusiastically encouraged to join a registered 'hive'. Any rogue vampires found not to be a member of such a hive could be arrested by the human authorities on suspicion of 'vagrancy' and placed into the care of a local hive. Hives existed to protect humans from vampires, and vampires from humans.
