Chapter 15 Slaves in a Suit THE ROAD FROM the Beaumont Plantation to Jacmel was more of a well-marked path than a true thoroughfare. The little traveling party, led by Patrice on his horse, needed to pass through adjoining properties on the way into town and he was concerned about the noise being made by his companions. The carriage, driven by Andre with Claude and Christophe in the back seat, appeared to be the source of the commotion. As Patrice turned to admonish his children, he realized they were playing a game with Abraham Julian, who was riding beside the carriage.
