The Stage Was Set
THE WHOLE TOWN was aware of the gens de couleur meeting, and Abraham wondered how Patrice could still consider it to be a well-guarded secret. Abraham used the excuse of checking on Champion’s injured hoof, and told Patrice he wanted to take him for a short ride. In reality, Abraham wanted to investigate the rustling in the trees outside of town, which became more noticeable as the day progressed.
“Nice and easy, boy. Easy, boy. We don’t want to have any problems later if we need to move quickly. I hope they took good care of you. Yes, yes. I know… treated you like a horse. Highly insulting.
