Chapter 5: The Luna’s First Shift

1083 Words
Una stood before the mirror, her breath caught in her throat as she watched the girl reflected back at her—eighteen years old, poised to become the Luna of the pack. Her wolf was ready to emerge. It was supposed to be a moment of triumph, a coming of age. But all she felt was a tremor of fear that tightened in her chest, not excitement. She ran her fingers through her dark curls, letting the soft wave of her hair fall freely around her shoulders. Her skin was freckled, a constellation of marks she'd once hated as a child. The bullies had called her "pale moon," teasing her for the way sunlight would scatter across her face, leaving her with a constellation of freckles. It had taken years—far too many years—of looking into mirrors, of pulling herself out from beneath the weight of others’ judgment, before she could stand here now with quiet acceptance. Her beauty was hers alone. It was not to be dictated by anyone’s gaze. Una sighed and shook her head, half-smiling at the reflection. She had learned the hard way to love herself, scars and all. "Hey, Luna," came the voice from the door. Ravan’s voice was low, teasing. "You look hot today." She didn't need to turn to know it was him. The way the birds whistled in greeting as he crossed the threshold—he always had a way with nature, as if it bent to his presence. His light footsteps were followed by an uninvited, almost suffocating warmth that pressed into the room. She glanced back to find him standing there, his dark eyes gleaming with something more than admiration. He grinned, a smirk on his lips, and her heart stuttered in her chest. There was something unsettling about the way he looked at her. Una stiffened, clutching the hem of her dress, suddenly feeling the weight of the day pressing on her. Her first shift, the coronation of her true form—the pack would finally see her as the true Luna, the rightful leader. It should have been a joyous occasion. Instead, there was a coldness settling around her like a storm. "Ravan," she said, her voice a little sharper than she intended. "It’s time. I should be leaving for the ceremony. I don’t have time for this." He chuckled, stepping closer. There was a predatory edge to the sound, and it made Una's stomach churn. "What's the rush, Luna?" he whispered, just behind her. His breath was hot against her skin. "You’ve waited your whole life for this moment. Let’s make it… memorable." A flash of panic sparked inside her. She knew him well. Too well. In the reflection, Una could see Ravan moving closer. His hand brushed against her shoulder—too familiar, too forceful. The smile on his face was no longer playful; it was hungry. A dark wave of realization crashed over her. He wasn’t just teasing. He was closing in. Her body reacted before her mind could catch up. The ground beneath her feet seemed to shift as a primal instinct surged through her veins. Her pulse quickened, blood rushing with a heat she couldn’t control. "Don’t," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "Please…" But Ravan was beyond listening. His hand slipped lower, gripping her waist with a fierceness that sent a shock through her body. His lips brushed against the back of her neck, and Una felt the world tilt—like something ancient, something wild, was waking inside of her. The surge of power was unstoppable. Her skin burned, and with it, her bones began to ache. A voice deep inside her, the wolf, was roaring, clawing at her chest, demanding release. It wasn’t a choice anymore. Her first shift was coming, but it wasn’t the beautiful transformation she'd imagined. It was something dark and terrible, born of fear and desperation. Her eyes flashed yellow, her pupils dilating as the wolf inside of her pushed against her skin, wanting out. The air in the room thickened. Ravan’s laughter faltered as Una spun toward him, her fingers curling into claws—her nails sharpening, elongating, darker than before. Ravan froze. Una’s breath caught in her throat as the transformation completed itself in a flood of agony. Her skin split and stretched, her body reshaping as fur sprouted, and her face elongated into the wild, sharp features of the wolf. But there was no beauty in this shift. It was the desperate, frenzied awakening of a predator who’d been wronged. Ravan’s eyes widened in terror. “Una… wait…” he stammered, stumbling backwards, but it was too late. Her wolf howled, the sound echoing in the room. The power in her limbs surged, and without thinking, she lunged. The moment her teeth sank into Ravan’s flesh, she could taste the metallic burn of his fear. His scream was cut short as she tore into him, fury and rage spilling out of her in violent waves. She heard his heartbeat slow and felt the last tremor of life in his body as he crumpled beneath her. Una froze, panting heavily, her wolf’s senses clouded with blood and adrenaline. She looked down at the mess she had made—Ravan, the boy who had once been her friend, was now lifeless, his blood staining the floor beneath them. The gravity of what had just happened hit her like a punch to the gut. She had killed him. The wolf inside her whined, as though confused by the violence. But Una was no longer the scared girl who used to hide from her own reflection. She had embraced her wolf and accepted it as part of her. She would not run from this moment, no matter how monstrous it felt. Her heartbeat steadied, and with trembling hands, she wiped the blood from her face. She had taken his life, but she had done it to protect herself. In this world, there was no room for weakness, no space for hesitation. The door to her room burst open, and voices flooded in. Her pack—the others—were gathering, their eyes wide as they looked at her. The air was thick with uncertainty, fear, and something else. Curiosity. Una stood tall, her body still trembling but resolute. She had faced the darkness inside her and come out of it stronger. She was no longer the frightened girl in the mirror. Today, she was Luna.
