“How worse can my luck get?” She whispered under her breath when she found her voice.
Vincent Blackthorn was seated before her, his lips curled in amusement as he tapped his cheek softly. “There’s no way I’m getting this job.” She thought, her feet withdrawing from the room as she backed away.
“Look what we have here,” Vincent spoke, the gruffness of his voice reminding her of their night together when he had whispered sweet nothings into her ears.
Oh! She was so f****d.
“You’re Vincent Blackthorn.” Her voice came off stronger than she expected.
He raised his eyebrows, clearly enjoying the look on her face. “I didn’t think I’d see you again after you ran off.” He chuckled, adjusting his wristwatch.
‘f**k! He was beautiful.’
She hadn’t gotten the chance to take a close look at him that morning as she was in a hurry but, as she stood before him, the bright light in his office giving her a perfect view of his face, she wondered how many days it had taken God to sculpt a man like Vincent Blackthorn.
Her eyes dropped to his lips. The same lips she had gotten lost in just last night. The sa-
“Eyes are up here, Miss Blake.” He snapped his fingers, pulling her out of her daze.
When she looked up, she found him smirking proudly, a look she wanted to wipe off his face.
“I should leave.” She suddenly said, nodding to herself. “You won’t be hiring me anyway.” She gave a small bow and turned to leave but was stopped by his voice.
“How disappointing.” He said calmly, making her pause in her tracks. “I didn’t expect you to be weak.”
His statement infuriated her.
Was that why Dennis thought he could fool her and get away with it? Because she seemed weak?
She turned sharply, her eyes throwing daggers at him. “I am not weak.” She replied sternly.
“You are.” He challenged, his expression turning serious.
“I am not!” She raised her voice, her eyes watering.
How embarrassing!
The last thing she wanted to do was cry in front of a man who thought she was weak after she had shared her entire life story with him the previous night and gave him her body.
She had done too much of that the previous night.
“You’re giving up without trying. That’s what weak people do. You, Miss Ariana Blake, are weak.” He was unrelenting.
“What boss would want to hire a woman he had s*x with on the same day they met? Tell me?” She said painfully through gritted teeth. Then, she paused and took a step back, laughing at herself. “You probably think I’m a cheap slut.”
Vincent’s eyes darkened and his jaw ticked subtly. “No one called you a cheap slut.”
“But that’s what you think of me. Am I wrong?” She retorted.
Vincent stared at her expressionless and sat up straight, his right hand out in front of him. “Let’s get one thing straight, Miss Blake. I don’t mix business with pleasure.” He clarified.
“What happened yesterday was a mere one-night stand with a stranger. The person standing before me is Ariana Blake, an applicant for the position of my personal assistant. Do you understand?” His tone was cold, his glare sending chills down her spine.
As much as his words calmed her, she felt a weird sting from some part of it.
A mere one-night stand with a stranger…
He was right. That was exactly what it was.
What else did she expect? That he would suddenly fall in love with her because of it?
“Now, Miss Blake. Take a seat.” He motioned to the chair on the opposite side.
Ariana took a deep breath, biting her lips nervously as she obeyed.
“From your CV, you are quite qualified for the job.” He started and her face lit up.
“But, I have an issue with your work experience.”
Her face fell yet again.
It was always the same with every company.
How the hell was she supposed to get the experience if no one was willing to employ her?!
“It’s one thing to know the theoretical part of handling multiple businesses. It’s another thing to actually know how to implement those theories. It bothers me.” He shook his head, staring at her CV document.
“Mr Blackthorn.” She exhaled, pursing her lips. “If no one is willing to hire me, I can’t get that experience and that field will be left empty on my CV for a really long time.” She explained slowly.
“As you can see from my CV, I graduated as the best in my class and won several awards. You won’t find a better candidate for this job, Mr Blackthorn.” She said convincingly, remembering the words she had rehearsed on her way to the office.
Vincent didn’t reply immediately but, he kept his gaze on her, almost as if he was searching for something in her eyes.
After one minute, he closed her CV and pushed it to the side. “Alright then, Miss Blake.” Ariana’s body hair stood as she waited to hear the one sentence she craved the most.
“I will hire you.”
Her mouth dropped in both shock and disbelief. It was finally happening!
Before she could open her mouth to exclaim out of excitement, Vincent raised his index finger.
“But, I have a condition.”
Once again, she rejoiced too early.
She raised an eyebrow, wondering what his condition could be. Not that she cared. She was willing to do anything.
However, what came out of his mouth was something she didn’t see coming.
“Marry me.”
