Chapter 18: Lies (Leigh’s POV)
Oliver and I were curled up on the recliner together when I asked, “So what happened that day. What shifted.”
“The only thing that happened that day was that I got the s**t scared out of me by the Alpha. Jace snuck me into his house for some snacks and then we were going to go play in his room but we got caught.” He responded with a small shrug of his shoulders. Like how would that shift his life?
That was the day I saw him. That was the first day I started watching him from afar. Could this mean he’s destined to be my mate, since that day? I start to say something to him. I don’t know what. Maybe confess everything right then. I wanted to, but at that same moment, Jace walked in.
“Hey, guys the Alpha... Err my dad wants to have that meeting now. Conference room in 5 minutes. See y'all there.” Jace declared and then left again.
“It starts.” Oliver chuckles.
“What starts?” I ask barely above a whisper as I snuggle into his chest.
“I’m officially Beta.” He says with a smile. He is so innocently oblivious to what that means. I don’t know why but I am all of a sudden more nervous about this meeting. Like it will be a life-changing moment.
Five minutes later we are downstairs in the conference room. In attendance, there is uncle Jamie and aunt Rachel, the former Betas Riley and Glenda Forester, Jace and Liv, and Oliver and I. I go to take a seat on Oliver’s lap like Liv is doing on Jace’s, but a low growl coming from uncle Jamie directs me to the head seat. It’s my meeting so I am to lead it. f**k, I don’t want to do this. I just want to curl up in my bed with Oliver and forget that all this Royal s**t needs to be told. Why did I agree to this stupid idea of Jace's anyway?
I take my seat at the head of the table and receive quizzical looks from Liv and Oliver. All while Glenda is staring daggers at me. What a b***h.
I clear my throat before I begin. “Welcome, Luna Liv and Beta Oliver. Being a part of the Silver Crescent Ranks means that you have to be let in on the family secret.” Oliver is staring at me very intently as I speak with a tight jaw. “Silver Crescent has always been closely tied with the Royal family. For the past eight generations, the Silver Crescent Alpha has been a descendent of the Royal family. As it is now with Jace as Alpha and as it was with uncle Jamie as the previous Alpha. The Royal line has been thinned out and is sadly contained in just this room.”
I stop and take a deep breath before I continue, “Yesterday when you vowed to the Goddess for your pack, you also tethered yourself to the Royal family. The cup that you drank from not only contained your successor's blood but the last remaining member of the Royal courts blood too.” Liv was looking confused while Oliver continued to stared at me looking like his jaw was about to break.
I have no choice but to rip the band-aid off and make this quick, “There will be an announcement made in about eight weeks. We will announce that the Royal Court is not extinct. That, someone, did survive the m******e that happened right here. That the rightful heir to the throne survived the attack on the Royal Court. On my 18th birthday, I will be announced as your Queen.” Oliver’s face fell. Whatever he was expecting was not this. Liv let out an audible gasp.
Before anyone else could speak Oliver’s face turned up into an evil smile. “So you have been lying to us the whole time. I should have known. All of you knew and let me… SCREW YOU ALL.” He growled before throwing his chair at the wall and then running from the room. He shifted before he was even out of the house into a deep red colored wolf, that is Lucky.
“Well, that went over well.” Glenda cackled from her seat.
I just growled at her. I looked back at uncle Jamie who gave me the smallest nod before I took off after Oliver.
I stayed in human form. If Oliver was upset I didn’t need Jade’s attitude thrown into the mix. She is already grumbling about him being disrespectful s**t in the back of my mind. I move as fast in human form as most wolves. I found him on the edge of the waterline where the trees have thinned between Silver Crescent and Royal Wolfe land. I know he smelt me before he saw me. He let out a warning growl before I even broke the tree line.
“Please just talk to me. Oliver please.” I begged in a small voice. He was pacing and shaking his head back and forth.
“Why would I?” He asked harshly after shifting back to human form. All tight lean muscle on show. Focus Jade. She is such a horny little b***h. I noticed his eyes are still black. Lucky is still in control.
“Don’t let your insecure bullshit f**k this up again.” Ah, there’s Jade she slipped out for a minute.
He laughed. “You think I’m insecure.” He c****d his head to the side. “I know you better than you think. Baby Girl.”
“What are you talking about.”
“I could destroy your whole world right now.” He responded with a smirk. Why is he not as upset as I am. He has been fighting for this. For us. Tears begin to fall down my cheeks.
“What…”
He interrupted me, “Do you think you are the only one that has been lying.”
“So what have you been lying about Oliver?” I asked with a small sob breaking loose from my chest. I see no sign of the boy I have been falling in love with right now. He has a look of pure hatred on his face. I’m afraid to know but I had to.
He laughs again, “You had actually bought it. All of it.” All I could manage was a questioning look. I knew what he was going to say before he said it. I thought it every time I had caught him with Dakota. Every time he pulled away from me. “You really thought the puppy dog eye, love, bullshit was all real didn’t you?”
“So that's it you don’t love me. That is supposed to destroy my whole world.” It does but he doesn’t need to know that. I want to curl up in a ball and just sleep. Forget this day happen.
“No, that’s not all Princess.” He could see my anger flair at that nickname. I hate Princess and it’s what Jace would call me when we were being hateful to each other. “So you really don’t know. I thought for a moment the whole thing was to f**k with me when I found out he was in on your lie.”
I still didn’t answer him. He was looking for a reaction now. Now that I knew it was all a lie, it was time to wear my poker face. I could guess that the he, he is referring to, is Jace. In the last few years, we had been horrible to each other, but we had fixed things. Right?
“Ah, I can see the light bulbs come on. The understanding that is hitting you right now. Jace orchestrated the whole thing. Did you think he was your friend again? We wanted to see if we could break you. We wanted to see if you would f**k me since I’m not going to be your mate. I already know who the Goddess has planned as my mate. I always have.” He closed the distance between us as he spoke. Pinning me to a tree behind me.
Please don’t say her name. “Dakota will be my mate. I know that I have a while until I will be mated, so I had plenty of time to play with you. Why do you think she was sucking my d**k the night of my birthday? Much better than you ever did. But I did like that you swallowed. Did I taste good Princess?” He asked pressing his manhood into me. I was so glad I hadn’t shifted so I was still clothed. He wasn’t even hard. He doesn’t want me. He never really did. It was all a game.
“Garrett was in it too.” He continued. Might as well take everyone down with him. “Trying to see if his "waiting on his mate" bullshit would work. Get you to spread those pretty little legs for him. He used Sam to help seduce you. She got in between those thighs almost as much as I did. But you kept your eyes on me.” I spit in his face.
He bent and wiped my spit off on the shoulder of my t-shirt before running his nose along my mating spot. He continued with his mouth at my ear, “Mychael’s plan was to keep back until we all failed and then pity f**k you. Sarah thought it was the funniest s**t ever after you called her a w***e and Liv was laughing with her. None of them are your friends. We were all laughing at you the whole time. Why would we ever want you as our Queen? You are pathetic. Our little inside joke.”
“f**k you.” I finally found my voice and spat back. I was sick from the feel of his hands on me.
“Awe is the little Princess mad now. Should I be afraid?” He asks ramming me against the tree.
“Get out of here and don’t ever come back.” I managed to keep my voice from breaking. Trying desperately to hold myself together and to hold Jade from killing him. I still love him. No matter how much I hate him right now I can’t let her do that.
“You are not my Alpha.” He boasts still in my ear.
“I am your queen you insecure worthless d**k for brains asshole. I said get the f**k out of here now. Before I unleash Jade on your ass.” I pushed him back from me, but he moved closer to me again.
“And why should I be afraid of her. Huh, Princess.” I know at that moment my eyes flashed black with their green glow because he flinched. Releasing the hold he had taken on my hips. His wolf saw the power of his Queen for just a second before I took back over. I could feel a tremble roll through his body.
I was back in control when I replied, “You should be afraid. Jade will skins you alive while making you eat your own severed c**k. NOW GO.” I growled out while grabbing him by his shoulders and kicking him across the glade. I am barely holding on to the rein of Jade as it is. We want to fillet Oliver but I have bigger fish to fry. Jace will pay for this. I will have my revenge on Oliver later. It will be brutal, but if I act now his quick death will not satisfy my rage.
Oliver quickly shifted back to his wolf form and hightailed it out of there. Smartest thing he has done all day. As he left he had a strange look in his eyes. I was seeing red too much at this time to notice that the look showed remorse and guilt.
***(Jace's POV)***
I watch as Leigh runs after Oliver. I don’t follow. They need to figure this out on their own. Now I am left to finish explaining all this mess to my mate. My Liv, that is still in my arms. Thankfully.
Who knew Ollie was the overdramatic one of them. Wait no. That sounds right. He really has always been the dramatic one of the two. His insecurities have always been his downfall. My mate is level-headed and understanding.
I lean my head down to her ear as her head is on my chest. “How are you feeling about all this Angel?”
“Not happy that everyone lied to me, but I can understand it. It was all to protect Leigh right?”
“Yes. It was to protect Leigh. We have to keep her safe. She has to become our Queen. I will be her Beta Alpha and you will be her Beta Luna if you accept.”
“That speech earlier didn’t sound like I had much of a choice.” She states looking up at me through her long lashes. She is very observant. She is the best person I could have asked for as my Luna.
I pulled her closer to my chest. “It's not much of a choice but there is still one. If you didn’t want this. I… We could make the same decision that my parents made. We can still back out. It’s dangerous being a Royal, but it’s in my blood. I want this, but I want you more.”
“I love you.” She told me in a voice barely above a whisper.
“I love you, my Angel.” I rubbed a comforting hand up and down her back. So happy she is mine.
“Let’s be badass Royal Betas together, okay.” She whispered back. Her whole face lighting up with a smile.
I chuckled and kissed her head. “Whatever you want my Angel. Thank you.” I whispered back.
We stayed in the conference room. Everyone else had left. We were just enjoying each other too much to move. After a while I felt the familiar nudging of a mind-link from Oliver, so I let him through.
He sounded out of breath and his words ran together.
“What say that again.”
It sounded like he stopped and caught his breath before repeating himself. “I said I’d run if I were you. Have fun cleaning up my mess jackass.”
“What did you do, Oliver?” He only laughed as he closed off the link completely.
Before I knew it Leigh was standing in front of me. I stood quickly and pulled Liv behind me. I watched as Leigh pulled back and punched me as hard as she could in the face. I saw stars and I think I lost the world for a moment.
When I came back to my senses I heard her growl, “Get out of my house now. Everyone out.” Anyone in the house could hear her. It was like cockroaches scurrying away from the light. Staff, anyone still hungover from last night's party, my parents, and Liv’s all felt the power of her voice and were forced to leave.
That is one of the perks of being her Beta she has to direct the command at me for it to work. I could feel Liv trembling behind me but she didn’t have to leave yet either. I wish she did though. I don’t want Jade anywhere near her.
It had been a moment and she was staring daggers at me. I finally found my voice and asked in a calm quiet voice. “What happened. What did he say to you, my Queen.”
“Oh, he told me everything.” Her tone was menacing. It sounded more like Jade than Leigh. “You really had me fooled with all this ‘My Queen' bullshit. You’re still the selfish asshole you have always been. I knew it was all too good to be true.”
“What did he say to you?” Liv asked from behind me. Her voice mimicking mine.
“You, you had me fooled the most. You made me believe I had a friend, a real friend. Are you happy now? Do u want to meet my only friend? Jade would love to come out to play.”
I took a step back and Liv moved with me. “No Leigh. We will leave. Jade does not need to be out right now. We will talk when you're ready.”
“Never. If you ever come back we will kill you.” She screamed as we ran from the house. The building shaking in our wake from the growls coming from Leigh. The last look from her was haunting. Her eyes were black with their green glow. They did not belong to Leigh. They belonged to Jade.
I got us back as quickly as I could onto Silver Crescent land. I have done nothing to Leigh. We made up at the beginning of the year. What could he have said to her to make her hate me? I know it’s all lies but why would she believe them.
