CHAPTER 15: The Challenge

1073 Words
The air in the council hall was thick with unspoken tension, the kind that clung to the skin like a storm waiting to break. Every Alpha, every high-ranking wolf in the region, had gathered in the stone chamber, their eyes locked onto the two men standing at its center. Xander. Killian. Both powerful. Both were unwilling to yield. And between them—Selene. Her pulse pounded as she stood frozen in place, the weight of their battle pressing down on her like a physical force. This wasn’t just a fight for dominance. This was a fight for her fate. For her freedom. Killian’s cold, calculating gaze met hers before shifting to Xander, his lips curling into a sneer. “You’re making a mistake,” he said, voice laced with amusement. “You think you can stand against me? Against the bond?” Xander’s expression didn’t waver. If anything, his jaw set harder, his silver eyes burning with defiance. “I think you’re afraid,” he said, his voice calm. Dangerous. “Afraid that, for the first time, you don’t own her.” A growl rumbled deep in Killian’s chest. “I don’t need to own what’s already mine.” Selene flinched at the words, shame curling in her stomach even as her anger flickered to life. She wasn’t his. She had never been. Xander took a step forward, slow and deliberate. “Then prove it,” he said. “Fight me.” The room went deadly silent. Killian arched a brow, feigning boredom, but Selene saw the flicker of something beneath it—something dangerous. “You want to fight me for her?” Killian chuckled darkly, shaking his head. “You can’t challenge a bond, Xander. No matter how much you want to.” Xander’s gaze was unshakable. “No. But I can challenge *you.*” The words sent a ripple through the gathered wolves. A challenge. A direct fight for dominance. For her. Selene’s breath caught as she looked between them, her heart hammering against her ribs. Killian’s smirk faded. “You think you can win?” “I know I can,” Xander replied. The silence that followed was deafening. Then Killian laughed. The sound was sharp, cruel. He rolled his shoulders, his muscles tensing beneath his shirt. “Fine,” he said, his voice like steel. “Tomorrow night under the full moon.” His eyes darkened. “I’ll make sure you regret it.” Selene felt the air shift as the decision was made, the weight of fate crashing down around them. Tomorrow, everything will change. --- That night, Selene couldn’t sleep. She sat by the window of her room, staring at the moonlit forest beyond, her hands curled into the fabric of her dress. Tomorrow, Xander will fight. For her. She didn’t know how to feel about that. A part of her wanted to scream, to demand that he let her handle her own fate. But another part—the part that had been caged for so long—felt something close to hope. A knock at her door made her jump. “Selene?” She knew the voice before she turned. Xander stood in the doorway, his presence filling the room even before he stepped inside. His eyes were shadowed with something unreadable, his usual smirk absent. For a long moment, neither of them spoke. Then— “You shouldn’t do this,” Selene whispered. “You don’t have to.” Xander exhaled, stepping closer. “Yes, I do.” She swallowed hard. “He won’t fight fairly.” “I don’t expect him to.” Selene shook her head, frustration tightening her chest. “Then why? Why risk your life for something that isn’t—” She cut herself off, the words dying in her throat. Something that isn’t yours. Xander’s gaze burned into her, as if he could hear the unspoken words. “He doesn’t deserve you,” he said softly. “And whether you believe it or not, you deserve a choice.” Her breath hitched. A choice. She had never been given one before. Xander reached out, his fingers brushing her cheek, barely there. But the touch sent a shock through her, lighting every nerve in her body. “You’re not his, Selene,” he murmured. “And I’ll prove it.” Her heart ached at the conviction in his voice, at the raw intensity in his eyes. She wanted to believe him. She wanted to believe in something more than fate. But tomorrow, Killian will fight with everything he had to keep her. And Xander would have to be willing to do the same. --- Selene didn’t realize she had drifted into a restless sleep until the sound of movement outside her door startled her awake. The dim glow of early morning bled into the sky, casting a blue hue over the room. Her stomach twisted. Today was the day. She rose from the bed, wrapping her arms around herself as she stared out the window. The village was unusually quiet, as if everyone was holding their breath, waiting for the inevitable clash. Wolves prepared in hushed murmurs, sharpening weapons that wouldn’t be used in the fight but were always kept close. It was instinct, a reminder that battle meant survival. Selene forced herself to get dressed, donning a simple tunic and leggings. As she laced up her boots, her fingers trembled. Not from fear for herself—but for him. Xander. She didn’t know when it had happened—when the shift inside her had turned from mere gratitude to something deeper. Something dangerous. He had inserted himself into her life with quiet confidence, standing between her and Killian like an immovable force. And now, because of her, he was risking everything. A knock at the door made her pulse jump. This time, she knew before opening it. Xander stood there, his expression unreadable, but there was something steady in his gaze. Something reassuring. “It’s time,” he said simply. Selene swallowed hard, forcing a nod. She followed him outside, the morning air crisp against her skin. As they walked side by side toward the clearing, toward the fight that would decide everything, she fought the urge to reach for him. To stop him. But she didn’t. Because this was his choice. Just as he had given her one. And gods help her. She prayed he would survive it.
