CHAPTER 5: The Alpha's Obsession

1208 Words
Killian’s POV Killian had never known regret like this. The moment Selene disappeared from his pack’s land, something inside him snapped. At first, he told himself it was a relief—that casting her out had been necessary, that rejecting her was his only choice. But the silence that followed was deafening. The absence of her presence was a wound that refused to close. He had made a mistake. A grave one. Killian stood in the grand study of his packhouse, staring out the massive window that overlooked the dense forest beyond. He had expected to feel free, unburdened. Instead, a slow, maddening ache clawed at his insides. It wasn’t just the broken mate bond—it was something deeper, something he hadn’t foreseen. Possession. Selene had been his, and now she was gone. A sharp knock at the door barely pulled him from his thoughts. “Enter.” The door creaked open, and Beta Nolan stepped inside, his usual composure faltering. “Alpha, we have news.” Killian’s jaw tightened. “Where is she?” Nolan hesitated. “Our scouts tracked her to the river’s edge. But… she wasn’t alone.” The air grew thick with tension. “Who?” Nolan exhaled. “A Lycan.” Silence reigned. Then, in a blur of movement, Killian’s desk was upturned, books and papers scattering across the floor. A low, furious growl ripped from his chest. “Who is he?” “We’re not certain yet,” Nolan admitted. “But she left with him, willingly.” The words sliced through Killian like a blade. The thought of Selene with another, of her choosing another sent a dangerous heat flooding through his veins. He had rejected her, yes. But that didn’t mean she was free to belong to someone else. His hands clenched into fists. “Find her; Now.” “Killian,” Nolan said carefully, “you cast her out.” Killian’s eyes burned with fury. “She’s still mine.” --- Selene’s POV Selene didn’t realize how exhausted she was until she was finally somewhere safe—at least, as safe as one could be in the company of a Lycan. Xander’s cabin was nestled deep within the forest, far from the reach of any pack. It wasn’t large, but it was sturdy, its wooden structure blending into the trees. The inside was surprisingly warm, a fire crackling in the hearth, casting long shadows across the walls. Selene sat on the edge of a small cot, her body still sore from the countless bruises left by Killian’s enforcers. The past few days were a blur, but one thing remained clear—she could never go back. Killian had made his choice, and she was done begging for a love that no longer existed. Xander set down a bowl of water and a cloth beside her. “You should clean your wounds.” Selene looked at him, trying to piece together what little she knew about him. He was unlike any wolf she had ever encountered—powerful, controlled, and completely unfazed by the surrounding chaos. His silver eyes, sharp and piercing, held secrets she couldn’t begin to unravel. “Why are you helping me?” she asked finally. Xander didn’t look at her as he pulled off his jacket, revealing the strong, defined muscles beneath. “Because you needed it.” She frowned. “That’s not an answer.” He finally met her gaze. “Because I know what it’s like to be cast aside.” Something in his voice—something dark and painful—made her chest tighten. But before she could press further, a sudden shift in the air sent a chill down her spine. A presence, faint, but growing closer. Xander noticed it too. His head tilted slightly, his body going rigid. “Stay here,” he ordered before disappearing out the door. Selene’s pulse pounded. The night outside was still, but she could feel it—that same energy she had once felt before Killian rejected her. A low growl echoed through the trees. Then, just as suddenly, the door burst open. Killian stood in the doorway, his eyes glowing with fury, his chest rising and falling with ragged breaths. His scent—once comforting, now suffocating—wrapped around her like a noose. Her heart lurched. “Selene,” he breathed. “Come home.” She stared at him. Once, she would have given anything to hear him say that. But now? Now, it was too late. Selene squared her shoulders. “You made sure I had no home to return to.” Something flickered in Killian’s expression—pain, regret—but it was buried beneath his overwhelming dominance. “I was wrong,” he admitted. “I—” A low, warning growl rumbled from behind him. Xander. Killian’s posture stiffened as the Lycan stepped forward, his silver eyes glinting like sharpened steel. “She’s not going anywhere with you,” Xander said, his voice dangerously calm. A battle of wills erupted between them, power crackling in the air. Killian’s dominance pushed outward, but Xander didn’t flinch. Selene felt the tension coil tight around her. For the first time, she wasn’t afraid—not of Killian, not of Xander, not of the war brewing between them. She was free. And no one, not even her former mate, was going to take that from her. --- Killian left that night, but Selene knew it wasn’t over. The obsession had taken root. And soon, he would come back for her. --- Selene stood in the middle of a vast, moonlit field. The air was thick with the scent of something familiar, something comforting. Then she saw him. A man stood at the edge of the clearing, his back to her. His presence was overwhelming, radiating a power unlike anything she had ever felt before. She took a step forward, but as she did, he turned, and she gasped. It was Xander. Only… it wasn’t. He looked the same—same chiseled features, same piercing silver eyes—but something was different. His expression was softer, filled with something that almost resembled longing. “Selene,” he murmured, his voice distant, like an echo in the wind. She opened her mouth, but no words came. She could only stare as he took a step toward her. “You don’t remember, do you?” he asked, tilting his head slightly. Sadness filled his gaze. “Remember what?” she whispered. Xander reached for her, his fingers brushing against hers. The moment they touched, a surge of energy shot through her, sending warmth through her entire body. Images flashed through her mind—memories that weren’t hers. A different time, a different place. And then she woke up. Selene jolted upright, breath ragged, heart slamming against her ribs. She was back in Xander’s cabin, the fire still crackling in the hearth. But something was different. Something had changed. She could still feel the warmth of his touch lingering on her skin. Shaken, she buried her face in her hands. Whatever was happening—whatever connection she was starting to feel—it wasn’t just in her head. And that terrified her more than anything else.
