Chapter 8 - Almost Encounter

1603 Words
Sayde took her time climbing the stairs back to her room after eating the meal prepared by Mrs. Bonny. While they were eating she had seen Mr. Bonny head up the stairs hopefully to her room to check out the window. She met Mr. Bonny on the way down, “I didn’t see anything wrong with the windows in your room Miss Bloom but I installed a secondary locking device on your window just so you feel safe.” She smiled and thanked him very much for his help before quickly scurrying up the stairs to go lay on her bed. She sent a quick text to Trish asking about the progress. It was taking a little longer than she had anticipated. Today was day three and she wanted to move out of the bed and breakfast before the week was done. She spent the day mostly lazing about, Trish said that she would get back to her as soon as possible, something about reading through a contract and hiring an inspector before closing the deal. She sighed in frustration, she could get through a few more days, maybe she’d ask Mrs. Bonny if she needed any help. She hadn’t seen any people in the bed and breakfast besides her but it wasn’t like she was looking for them either. So far things seemed to be going smoothly albeit slower than she intended. She yawned a bit and then stared up at the ceiling before drifting off for an afternoon nap. She was awoken by the sound of low growls and scratching coming from somewhere outside, The growls were deep and primal, sending shivers down her spine. She sat up in bed, her senses on high alert. Her room was dimly lit by the soft glow of her phone screen, casting long shadows across the walls. The time read 8:26 PM, but time seemed irrelevant in moments like these. Carefully, she reached for the lamp, the familiar click bringing a small sense of comfort. The dim light barely lit the room but was enough to let her see where she was going, the ominous sounds ceased, leaving behind an eerie silence. Sayde hesitated for a moment before mustering the courage to approach the window. With cautious steps, she made her way across the room, her heart pounding in her chest like a war drum. Peering through the curtains, she was met with a sight that sent a chill down her spine. Two pairs of bright green eyes stared back at her, their intensity piercing through the darkness. She gasped, instinctively taking a step back. Her mind raced, trying to make sense of what she was seeing. As if sensing her fear, the creatures let out another low growl, the clouds covering the moon and the trees rustling in the distance. Sayde's breath caught in her throat as she realised the gravity of the situation. She quickly closed the curtains, her hands trembling slightly. She didn’t know what was outside, they looked like wolves but much larger, maybe it was a trick of the light or the way the dim light reflected on them but Sayde knew she had to tread carefully not to alert the animals that she was there. She quickly put on a pair of shoes and hurried downstairs, her heart running through her chest in fear. She bumped into Mrs. Bonny on the stairway. “Is everything alright Miss Bloom?” she looked over at her concern etched on her face. Sayde steadied herself, her breaths coming in quick gasps as she relayed what she had seen to Mrs. Bonny. “There are... creatures outside. Wolves, I think, but they seemed unnaturally large, and their eyes... their eyes were so intense,” she explained, her voice trembling with fear. Mrs. Bonny's expression shifted to one of concern as she listened attentively. “Wolves around here?” she muttered, more to herself than to Sayde. “We haven’t had any reports of them in a while, are you sure?” Sayde nodded fervently. “Yes, I saw them with my own eyes, they were right outside my window.” Mrs. Bonny’s brows furrowed as she processed this information. “Let me take a look,” she said, her tone firm yet reassuring. Together, they ascended the stairs back to Sayde’s room. Mrs. Bonny approached the window cautiously, pulling back the curtains to peer outside. Sayde stood close by, her nerves still on edge from the encounter. As Mrs. Bonny scanned the area outside, Sayde couldn’t shake off the feeling of unease. What if they were still out there, lurking in the shadows? What if they posed a danger not just to her but to others in the vicinity? After a few moments of silence, Mrs. Bonny turned back to Sayde with a perplexed expression. “I don’t see anything unusual, Miss Bloom. No signs of any creatures or disturbances,” she reported, her voice tinged with uncertainty. Sayde’s heart raced, torn between relief and lingering apprehension. “But they were there, I saw them,” she insisted, her voice wavering slightly. “I believe you, dear,” Mrs. Bonny reassured her, placing a comforting hand on Sayde’s shoulder. “Perhaps it was a trick of the light or maybe some stray dogs passing by. Either way, I will keep an eye out for you.” Despite Mrs. Bonny’s attempt to ease her worries, Sayde couldn’t shake off the feeling of foreboding. She thanked Mrs. Bonny for her concern and watched as the elderly woman made her way back downstairs. Alone in her room once again, Sayde couldn’t bring herself to relax. The encounter with the mysterious creatures had unsettled her deeply. She paced back and forth, her mind racing with questions and uncertainties. As the night wore on, Sayde found it increasingly difficult to shake off the feeling of being watched. Every creak of the floorboards, every rustle of the wind outside seemed amplified, heightening her sense of paranoia. Unable to bear the restriction of fear in her room, Sayde decided to take a walk outside. The cool night air brushed against her skin as she stepped out onto the porch, her gaze scanning the surroundings for any sign of movement. The moon hung low in the sky, casting a silvery glow over the landscape. Everything appeared calm and quiet, devoid of the mysterious creatures that had startled her earlier. Sayde wandered a bit further, her footsteps echoing softly in the stillness of the night. She couldn’t shake off the feeling of being on edge, as if something ominous lurked just beyond her line of sight. Just as she was about to turn back towards the bed and breakfast, a faint rustling sound caught her attention. She froze, her senses on high alert. Peering into the darkness, she strained to identify the source of the noise. A figure emerged from the shadows, stepping into the moonlight. It was a man, tall and lean, his features obscured by the darkness. Sayde’s heart raced as she watched him approach, her instincts urging her to be cautious. “Who are you?” she called out, her voice quivering slightly. She really shouldn’t have left the comfort and safety of her room at this time of night. It was not like anyone here knew her, she was just a passing stranger in this place for now. The man stopped, his gaze locking onto hers. “I mean you no harm,” he replied, his voice calm yet tinged with an air of mystery. Sayde’s eyes narrowed, her unease growing. “Why are you lurking around here in the middle of the night?” The man took a step closer, his expression unreadable. “I was drawn here by a sense of... curiosity,” he admitted cryptically. “You smell like someone familiar, I may have been mistaken.” Sayde’s instincts screamed at her to retreat, to seek safety indoors. But a part of her was intrigued by the enigmatic stranger standing before her. She couldn’t deny the strange feeling building inside her head, a dull pain throbbed through her head. She lifted her hand to her head as her head pulsed slightly. He chuckled in the cover of the darkness before stepping back into the darkness, “We will see again.” His chuckle echoed faintly in the night as he retreated into the shadows, leaving Sayde standing there, her thoughts racing. The encounter had left her with more questions than answers. Who was this mysterious man, and why did he seem to speak to her with such familiarity? The way he spoke hinted at hidden knowledge, and Sayde couldn't shake off the feeling that their paths would cross again. With a lingering sense of caution, Sayde turned back towards the bed and breakfast, her steps quickening as she made her way indoors. The warmth and familiarity of the building offered some solace amidst the uncertainty that now clouded her mind. As she reached her room, Sayde closed the door behind her and leaned against it, taking deep breaths to calm her racing heart. The events of the night had left her on edge, and she couldn't shake off the feeling of being watched, as if unseen eyes lingered in the darkness. Despite her unease, exhaustion soon caught up with Sayde. She slipped into bed, her mind still buzzing with thoughts of the mysterious stranger and the strange creatures she had seen earlier. Sleep eluded her for a while as she replayed the night's events in her mind, trying to make sense of it all.
