“Do you see the target…?”
“Yes, boss. She’s heading toward a group of other wolves as we speak.”
“Good. Don’t lose sight of her. I want eyes on her at all times. Report back the second they leave.”
“Copy that, boss.”
END OF CONVERSATION
⸻
It wasn’t like this in the beginning… but ever since she came to this town, my boss, Vlad, has been going off the rails over this girl.
He never told me what the deal was with her—only that she was special and that time would tell. Whatever the hell that means. Crazy old man and his cryptic nonsense.
The only reason I’m still following him is to get my family out of hiding.
Unfortunately, I’m a rogue—without a home, without a pack. But I’ll say this… ever since I met Vlad, he made me feel like I was worth something. Like I wasn’t just another stray. Like maybe one day, I could have everything I’ve ever wanted.
And right now… that means finishing this job.
⸻
As I moved through the crowd, keeping low and out of sight, I tracked her carefully. My senses were locked in, every movement calculated—but I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off.
The “dirty-blood” girl…
Fiery red hair, sun-kissed skin—not pale, not dark… just enough warmth to stand out. She was… striking. Pretty in a way that made people look twice.
And that attitude…
Yeah. I’ve always liked a girl with a mouth.
I shook my head, forcing myself back on task. Focus.
She was talking to another girl—laughing, planning something. Probably strategizing for whatever game they were about to play. Still… something about the scene irritated me.
Too many guys on the other team.
Too many eyes on them.
Too many variables.
“Man, what is wrong with me…” I muttered under my breath.
This girl—I barely even know her—and yet she’s stuck in my head, messing with my focus.
But there’s something about her…
Something I can’t ignore.
⸻
Earlier today…
When I first got here, I scoped the area—watching, waiting, making sure no one recognized me. Vlad had only given me a few pictures: the girl… and her father, the pack’s beta.
That was it.
Minimal intel. Maximum risk.
As I glanced back down at my phone, studying their faces again, a commotion broke out toward the east side of the beach.
And there she was.
Plain as day.
Talking to some guy.
I narrowed my eyes, focusing harder—letting my wolf sharpen my vision.
Vampire.
“Great…” I muttered. “This just keeps getting better.”
It didn’t take long before things escalated. Out of nowhere, the alpha’s son came charging in like a damn storm—rage rolling off him in waves.
I leaned back slightly, tuning in with my hearing.
Every word.
Every breath.
Every shift in tone.
And then—
Sh!t.
“She’s mated…”
That changes everything.
This just got a hell of a lot harder.
⸻
After the chaos settled, I moved closer, slipping through the crowd—but I was too focused… too locked in…
BAM.
I slammed straight into someone.
“Sh!t—! I’m sorry. Are you alright?” I said quickly, grabbing her arms to steady her.
“For Goddess’ sake—watch where you’re going,” she snapped, rubbing her head.
I blinked… then froze.
Well… damn.
“I really am sorry,” I said, my tone softer now. “I was in a rush. You okay?”
“I’m fine… hey…” She tilted her head, eyes dragging over me. “You’re kinda hot.”
I let out a quiet breath, running a hand over the back of my neck.
Oh, I’m in trouble.
I cannot be doing this right now. I’m on a job.
“Uh… thanks. You don’t look bad yourself,” I said with a smirk.
Damn it. Get it together.
“So what’s your name, big boy?” she asked, smiling bright.
“Kade,” I said, a little too quickly. “And yours?”
“Meagan,” she said, biting her lip. “But you can call me whatever you like.”
Goddess help me.
This girl was driving me—and my wolf—insane.
“I’ve gotta wrap this up,” I muttered under my breath.
“Well, Meagan… it was nice meeting you, but I’ll catch you later.”
I leaned in, close enough to whisper in her ear—and close enough to catch her scent.
Sweet.
Human.
Interesting.
“Alright,” she murmured, stepping in just as close. “Find me later… I’ll be around.”
Then she bit my ear.
Yeah… this is dangerous.
“See you later, doll face,” I said, flashing a wink before pulling away.
No time to unpack that.
I had a job to finish.
⸻
After getting my head straight, I positioned myself under a shaded tree near the lifeguard shack. That’s when I spotted her again.
I waited. Watched.
Tracked.
Then the door opened—and she stepped out with her mate, arms full of supplies.
Lifeguard duty.
Perfect.
“This might actually be easy…” I muttered.
Now I just needed lover boy out of the picture.
⸻
It didn’t take long.
He was leaving.
And just as I started to move—
He looked straight at me.
Locked on.
Then started walking toward me.
“Fu&k…” I whispered. “Not good.”
No backing out now.
Play it cool.
⸻
“Hey,” he said, stopping just a few feet away. “You got a problem?”
I kept my expression neutral.
“Actually, I’m lost. First time here. Figured I’d ask a lifeguard for directions.”
He studied me—sharp, calculating.
“Hm. Lucky for you, I’m on duty. Where you headed?”
“The pier,” I said casually, keeping my heartbeat steady. Controlled.
“You’ll want to head west. Past the restrooms—about half a mile.”
“Appreciate it,” I said, already turning.
“Hey—what pack are you from?” he called.
I paused just enough.
“Oregon pack.”
Not a lie.
Just not the whole truth.
“Gray Moon, then,” he said knowingly.
“Yeah. Alpha Xander gave me a few days off. Mentioned this place. I’ve got a meeting with your beta tomorrow.”
Again—not a lie.
Just… adjusted.
His eyes narrowed slightly.
“Guess I’ll be seeing you again.”
“Looks like it,” I said with a smirk. “Name’s Kade.”
“Kade…” he repeated.
I turned, walking off. “Till next time… Jaxson Blackwood.”
⸻
The second I got out of his line of sight, I exhaled.
That took too damn long.
If he suspects anything, this whole mission blows up.
⸻
An hour later, I found myself at the pier—leaning against the railing, watching the water, beer in hand.
Trying to figure out how the hell I was supposed to convince this girl to meet her grandfather without sounding like a stalker.
Every version sounded worse than the last.
“Of course this would be my life…” I muttered.
Then—
Movement.
I glanced toward the bar.
And there she was.
The target.
Standing with a group of girls.
And right beside her…
Meagan.
I straightened, eyes narrowing.
“Well… isn’t that convenient.”
A slow grin spread across my face.
“This just became a whole lot easier.”
⸻
I followed them as they moved back toward the game.
Watched.
Waited.
Planned.
But my focus kept slipping…
Back to Meagan.
The way she moved. The way she laughed.
That pull…
I needed to figure out what the hell that was.
Fast.
⸻
By the time the game wrapped up—cheering, shouting, dancing—I knew it was almost over.
They won.
And I couldn’t help the small smile when Meagan did a little victory dance.
But it vanished just as quickly.
She turned toward the guys.
And something in my chest tightened.
What the hell is that…
I turned away, jaw tight.
Then—
Chaos.
Four naked idiots running around screaming about dancing in the moonlight.
“Are you kidding me…” I muttered, turning away in disgust.
The distraction cost me.
By the time I pushed through the crowd—
They were gone.
“Dammit!”
⸻
I made my way back to my truck, frustration building.
Then—
There.
A jeep.
The girls.
Leaving.
Perfect timing.
⸻
“Hello? Hello—?”
Vlad’s voice snapped through the phone.
“Oh—yes, sir. Sorry. Reporting in. They’re leaving.”
“Excellent. Did you get close?” he asked, eager.
“Not close enough. She has a mate… and he’s the future alpha.”
Silence.
Then a low, dangerous growl.
“This complicates things… but no matter. I anticipated this. Return to the pack house. We’ll regroup.”
“Yes, sir.”
I hung up, sliding into my truck.
This job just got a whole lot more dangerous.
And for some reason…
I had a feeling it wasn’t just because of the target anymore.
