Chapter 4

It was the first thing Aria felt as she drifted between darkness and awareness. A dull, throbbing ache pulsed through her shoulder, spreading like wildfire. Each breath sent a sharp sting through her ribs, and her body felt unnaturally heavy. The scent surrounding her was familiar—smoky cedarwood, crisp mountain air, and something uniquely Lucian. Her mind swam, struggling to grasp onto reality. She wasn’t in the forest anymore. She wasn’t dying. Her fingers twitched against soft fabric. A bed. Her lashes fluttered open, vision hazy, but as her senses sharpened, her heartbeat quickened. She was in Lucian’s chamber. The dim firelight cast long shadows along the stone walls, flickering against deep red curtains and a towering bookshelf lined with ancient texts. A heavy fur blanket covered her, the warmth pressing against her feverish skin. She tried to sit up—pain shot through her ribs. A soft gasp left her lips. Then—a growl. Low. Dark. Dangerous. Her breath caught. She turned her head slowly, her pulse hammering in her throat. Lucian stood near the far wall, his back to her. His shoulders were tense, every muscle locked, his fists clenched so tightly that his knuckles turned white. But it wasn’t just anger emanating from him. It was power. The air was thick with it, pressing against her chest like an invisible force. It rolled off him in dark waves, suffocating the room. Aria’s gaze drifted lower—her breath hitched. The stone wall beside him bore deep claw marks. Lucian was losing control. --- “You Should Have Let Me Die.” “You jumped in front of it.” His voice was quiet, but there was no mistaking the lethal edge. Aria swallowed hard. “I—I didn’t—” Lucian turned. His black eyes locked onto hers, and she froze. There was no warmth in them. No trace of the teasing smirk he often wore when provoking her. This was the Alpha. His beast barely restrained. “You should have let me take the hit.” His voice was sharp, like the c***k of a whip. “Do you even understand what you did?” She flinched at his tone. “I—I wasn’t going to let you—” “You weren’t going to let me what?” His growl deepened. “Take a wound meant for you?” She hesitated. “Yes.” Lucian’s jaw clenched. His control snapped. In an instant, he was in front of her. Caging her in. His hands slammed down on either side of her, gripping the bed frame. The wooden structure creaked under the force. Aria’s breath hitched. He was too close. The heat of his body, the barely restrained power rippling beneath his skin—it was intoxicating. "You nearly died for nothing, Aria," he said through gritted teeth. "That blade was silver." Her stomach dropped. "I thought—" "You thought it would hurt me?" His dark laugh sent shivers down her spine. "It wouldn’t have left a scratch." The reality crashed into her. She had thrown herself into danger, believing she was saving him. But Lucian had never been in danger. Only her. And now, he was livid. --- His breath was ragged, his chest rising and falling unevenly. Aria had never seen Lucian like this. Not when he fought. Not when he commanded his warriors. This was different. This was personal. His claws had elongated, the tips grazing the wooden frame. His fangs gleamed under the firelight, sharp and lethal. For the first time, she wondered—had anyone ever seen Lucian like this before? His control wasn’t just a choice. It was a cage. And she had nearly broken it. "Lucian—" She reached for him instinctively. He jerked back, his breath ragged. His hands trembled. "I should have killed him." Her eyes widened. "Who?" His gaze burned into hers. "Kade." A shiver ran down her spine. Kade—the rogue Alpha. Lucian had spared him once. Now, he regretted it. --- Lucian ran a hand through his hair, pacing like a caged predator. "I let my guard down," he muttered. Aria frowned. "Lucian, what aren’t you telling me?" Silence. Then—he turned to her. "My bloodline is different." The weight of those words settled heavily in the air. "I know you’re strong," she said carefully. "You’re the Alpha." Lucian exhaled. "Not just an Alpha." A strange chill ran through her. "What do you mean?" He hesitated, something dangerous flickering behind his gaze. "My lineage isn’t… normal." The room seemed to darken around them. She had felt his power before. Had sensed something more. But now… Now, she understood. Lucian wasn’t just powerful. He was something far greater. Something unstoppable. --- A sharp knock shattered the moment. Lucian’s head snapped toward the door, his wolf stirring. "Enter," he commanded. The door creaked open. One of his warriors stepped inside, bowing. "My Lord," the man said, glancing briefly at Aria before turning back to Lucian. "Kade has fled. His forces are scattered." Lucian’s expression remained unreadable. "But there’s a problem," the warrior added. Lucian’s eyes darkened. "What problem?" The man swallowed. "There’s… movement near the border." A deadly silence stretched between them. Lucian’s gaze sharpened. "Whose forces?" The warrior hesitated. "We don’t know yet." A tense pause. Then—a single sentence that made Aria’s blood run cold. "They’re here for her." Aria’s heart slammed against her ribs. Lucian’s claws extended. The room filled with an undeniable, suffocating power. His wolf was on the verge of breaking free. And this time—Lucian wouldn’t hold back. —
