Logan
Eleven hours earlier
The wraiths that always hovered weren't here.
It was just me and her and the night.
And for the first time in so many years, I wasn't plagued by the damned wraiths that went after my soul.
She took them all away. Whenever she was close by, they disappeared. But then I still couldn't feel her wolf.
My phone buzzed in my pocket and I raced to silence it, not wanting it to ring out and wake Dennis.
She was knocked out since after the late reception we'd had, and I'd brought her up to bed myself.
I answered the call, bringing the phone to my ear.
"Logan." I muttered into the phone, getting up and going to the foot of the bed, but not too far away.
"I've got the report, Alpha Logan. You won't like what you'll hear."
Fuck.
"I'm at the pack house, I'm heading up to your office, if you haven't succumbed to the dreadful f*****g marriage bliss and still wish to know about this, we'll meet there. Again, you really need to see this shit."
If Neil thought it was f*****g important, then I knew for sure he wasn't f*****g around.
I cursed as I slid on my shirt, and buttoned up, moving at the fast pace of a wolf as I headed to my office on the other side of the huge pack house, deliberately separated from me and my mate that way to keep business away from her.
I opened the door and even though the room was pitch black, I could see Niel already sitted on one of the couches facing each other in front of my desk.
I took one of the swivel chairs from the desk and turned it around to face Neil as he flipped on the light switch.
"What'd you find?"
I'd been to the Wilson's pack house two months ago to tell them I would mate their only daughter, Dennis.
They'd agreed, of course they'd had to, I was the best f*****g catch in New York City, not to mention absolutely terrifying to say no to, and I'd seen the girl myself, spoken to her and I'd sure as hell felt her wolf.
Fast forward two months later and I was getting mated to the same girl, except now I couldn't feel her wolf and all the cursed wraiths that tormented me disappeared every time I was near her. Something was off, and I'd told Neil just that.
I'd had him go dig around, knowing he had the best f*****g nose made for sniffing out dirt and he'd just now come back with Info. I could already feel it in my gut. Whatever he'd found out wasn't good.
He handed me a report and I spilled it on the low coffee table, seeing pictures and files. I picked up one picture of Dennis, looking more than a little scruffy. She was a blonde girl with blue eyes, but her hair in the picture was more dark dirty blonde than strawberry blonde and she wore skinny jeans with rips at the knees and a hoodie that hung up on her body.
I picked up another picture and it was still Dennis, but every bit different this time. She wore a black, low back, tight slip of a dress, with chunky heels and her strawberry blonde hair fell in long lush waves to her waist. Her eyes were fixed on the camera, lips puckered in a kiss.
I dropped both pictures, my gut churning and picked up a pile of stapled files. Adoption papers.
My brows drew down as rage filled me. It didn't help that the wraiths were swirling all around me in full force now, and they always brought the dark grimy cold hands of death and corpses with them.
It wasn't the same girl.
"Yes, they're not the same." Neil said, legs crossed at the knees, oblivious to the wraiths only I ever saw, only I had to live with.
"They're twins, sisters all right, but the other one, the one that's your mate now, is the omega. She was abandoned at the orphanage when the Wilson's adopted her sister, and they just adopted her three years ago, just after she turned eighteen."
They'd given me a fake.
I stared at him, eyes wide open but unseeing. I wanted to rip into something, anything. Preferably the Wilson's. "So they hid her all those years, just to bring her out now and mate her to me? Why?"
Neil chuckled. He didn't know how this seriously f****d with my plans and why it had to be the right twin. He thought this was funny, and I could break his nose if he laughed again. "I'll f*****g hit you if you laugh again."
He sobered up fast. I was still his Alpha and he knew better than to f**k with me. "They must have thought to give you the daughter they least cared about, Alpha Logan, and save their precious daughter from getting mated to you. We both know you don't exactly have the best reputation in the circle of Alphas." He grinned again and I had to resist the urge to hurl him across the room.
I was his Alpha, but he was only cheeky because he was my beta, and he had a ruthless reputation to match mine.
"Kettle calling pot what again?" I sneered at him.
"Face it, Logan, you're mated to an Omega."
"Not for long." I clipped out a reply.
I flipped over the first page, reading through the report and getting more and more enraged as I did. The Wilson's would know my rage come tomorrow. I flung the report away from me.
He leaned forward and his eyes got serious. "What now?"
"First thing after the council meeting in the morning, I'm going back to their pack house and I'm coming back here with the right f*****g twin."
Neil nodded. "I expected as much. But you're already mated to this one."
"What's her name again?" She'd been answering the right twins name the entire time.
Neil picked up the file I'd thrown away and scanned it. "Delia." He replied.
"I'm revoking my mating to Delia, and I'm going to have another mating ceremony with Dennis, this time just the both of us, since everyone's already witnessed the first one."
"They wouldn't know the difference anyway."
"Only I—" I got up and went to the huge chair behind my desk, sinking down into it as the wraiths swirled all around me, bringing the chill with them and suffusing me in their darkness again. —" and her family, will know I was mated to the wrong twin first. And depending on the explanation I receive tomorrow, they could all very likely meet a horribly gruesome ending."
"I know too, Logan. And the pack elder who's going to mate you and Dennis will also know."
I frowned at his cheeky comment, and then relented with a tormented sigh. "Get the f**k out my office, Neil."
He stood, and gathered up everything from the table. "You can't kill them if you're going to still mate their other daughter." And then he walked out.
He was right. I couldn't kill them and not cause trouble. And at the moment I had more important issues to tend to.
But I could punish Delia.
A nagging question throbbed at the back of my mind.
If Delia was an Omega and not the right twin, why did being with her bring me peace?
~
Present time.
"Get dressed, we're going to visit your parents." I told her, walking out of the bathroom without looking back.
I'd had to have a taste. Just one more to keep the wraiths away. But they were back now and my mood was even worse.
She entered the car and buckled in her seat belt, all the while not knowing that her little game was up, and I was returning her to her cunning parents.
I drove to the other side of town to the Shadow packs pack house and listened to Delia's heart beat all the way.
It was still the same scattered rythm she always had around me. I'd thought before it was only her attraction to me, but last night told me it was definitely more because of the lies she was playing.
I parked my daredevil, racy red porsche and killed the engine. "Get out."
I slid out as she was still unclipping her seatbelt and went up to stairs leading to their double doors.
Carter Wilson was Alpha of the Shadow pack, but he had less than even half the power and influence I had. He'd tried to s**t on the wrong wolf.
I entered the living room and saw them standing there, Carter, his mate Sophie and the twins I was supposed to be mated to, Dennis.
All present. Like I'd ordered them to be after informing them I was coming here with the dupe they'd given me.
I went to one of the grey high backed one seat settee and lowered myself into it, stretching languidly as I waited for Delia to enter.
I heard her tiny footsteps as she climbed the stair case and stepped through the open doors. I knew the moment she saw her parents and twin sister, because she drew in a panicked breath.
Must be surprised to see them show me there was a second one of her.
"Ummm…hi Father, hi..hi mother."
Interesting.
"Why don't you come sit beside me Dennis?"
Delia moves to sit beside me but I shoot her eyes that I'm sure she sees can kill, and she stops midway.
Dennis moves from her parents side and comes to me, sitting on the arm of the settee beside me.
My eyes found Carter's and held them as he blanched, I could smell the tension and putrid scent of fear in the air from all of them. "Now tell me, Carter, why did you lie to me again?"
It wasn't a question of if he lied to me. We all knew he f*****g had. He'd given me a fake.
He raised a finger and stabbed it at Delia. "It was all her doing, Alpha Logan, she took her sisters place at the mating ceremony after drugging her."
His hand raised and the sound of the slap to Delia's face resounded in the room.
Very Interesting.
