7The following day, Bass planned to meet Macky at Bill Chackiowski’s for another round of questioning. This was scheduled for the afternoon, allowing Bass time to visit Puchow’s apartment to offer his condolences.
Arriving at the apartment building, he noticed that the lobby door was propped open by the floor mat being wedged under it. Bass found the elevator working, and when he reached the seventh floor, Puchow’s door was wide open. Voices came from inside. Peering in, he saw a group of people packing boxes, wrapping dishes in newspaper, taking down photos, and talking in low tones that were not mournful, but respectful.
