Chapter
1Detective Bass’s phone rang. The call was from the front desk downstairs where a woman was waiting for him. Her name was Yvonne Smith. Although the name sounded vaguely familiar, Bass could not place it. He knew he had no appointments that morning or new assignments.
Before Bass left his desk, he checked his calendar. It had been three days since his last case, and that one was on the verge of being wrapped up. A simple case that ended with a quick arrest.
Bass took the elevator down. His stiff-soled shoes echoed in the hallway as he walked to the front desk. The officer on duty, Sergeant Tomé, nodded in the direction of a well-dressed African-American woman sitting awkwardly in a chair. Two shabbily suited men were sitting next to her.
