Chapter 51: God, Please Give Me One More Chance

1324 Words
During his week in Italy, Adrian was completely buried in work. He threw himself into it wholeheartedly, and finally, this day, he drew a line under everything. Adrian let out a long exhale. Days of non-stop work had left him exhausted—not to mention his jet lag still wasn't fully gone. At the simple celebratory dinner that evening, the Italians' enthusiasm was hard to refuse. Adrian held his wine glass, gazing out the window at the night scenery from afar. After consecutively refusing several beautiful women's invitations, his face had settled into a permanent "don't come near me" dark expression. At last, the peaches and plums finally stopped circling. "Mike, you're heading back home after finishing work? Come on, you should relax a bit. Stay and play with me for a few days." Sofia, the business partner—an Italian woman—made no secret of her interest in Adrian, inviting him. "No, Sofia. My flight to Greece is tomorrow," Adrian smiled and shook his head. "Greece? Wow, going to see the Aegean Sea?" Sofia raised an eyebrow. "Yeah. My love is there. She loves the Aegean Sea," Adrian swirling his wine glass, smiling. Sofia froze. She didn't see a wedding ring on Adrian's hand—she'd assumed... But Sofia quickly accepted the reality. "Your wife is very lucky," Sofia shrugged, clinking glasses with Adrian. "I'm not a good husband. But I'm thinking about making it up to her. Maybe this is my last chance," Adrian shook his head, somewhat dejected. "Tell her you love her!" Sofia smiled, giving Adrian some advice. "How should I do that?" Adrian looked at Sofia, seeking guidance. "Just tell her! Just say—I love you," Sofia performed dramatically, pretending to be deeply emotional. Looking at Sofia's exaggerated display, Adrian couldn't help but laugh out loud. But it hit him—he really had never told Willow he loved her. He thought things like that didn't need to be said out loud... So should he tell her? That he loved her? But was it too late already? "Love isn't supposed to be shown through actions?" Adrian, Mr. Oblivious, asked. "Oh my god—you've never told her you love her?!" Sofia stared, looking at this ultimate dense guy in disbelief. Adrian shook his head. "Just say it!" Sofia said helplessly, supporting her forehead with one hand. Adrian unconsciously touched the ring hanging on his chest beneath his shirt. It seemed to pulse with warmth, burning a hole in his heart. "Go back. Sleep well. Tomorrow, show up looking handsome in front of your wife—and then loudly tell her you love her!" Sofia patted Adrian's shoulder. "And then she'll forgive me?" Adrian asked, still not understanding. "Of course—love conquers all," Sofia said with certainty. Adrian nodded. If God would let him meet her again... If he still had a chance... --- The next day, Adrian took the earliest flight to Greece, then made his way to Santorini. Along the way, he was quietly hopeful. Would he run into Willow? He didn't know if his luck would be that good. Checking into the hotel, the balcony looked out over the entire Aegean Sea—vast and boundless, with gentle sea breezes brushing against Adrian's face, washing away his exhaustion. Adrian took a deep breath. His heart started racing uncontrollably. It was like he was twenty years old again—right now, he felt like a nervous young man. Putting down his luggage, Adrian prepared to walk around the village. Santorini wasn't that big after all—you could see it all in a day. He couldn't wait to experience everything here. He wanted to experience every step Willow had walked here, every view she'd seen, every breeze that had brushed past her. And of course, if he could run into Willow, even better. He thought—maybe in this romantic place, he'd tell her "he loved her." If they still had a chance... Adrian walked quickly out of the hotel. Outside the hotel were rows of small white buildings with blue domes. Walking along, Adrian recognized familiar scenery—these were scenes Willow had photographed. [Santorini puppy—so fat, so lazy!] [Flowers by the roadside—so pretty!] [I love the juice here!] [The walls here are covered in graffiti—so romantic~] ... Every single post Willow had shared on social media, Adrian had firmly memorized. Walking this route was like following in Willow's footsteps through Santorini. Adrian couldn't help but slow down and savor it all—seeing the views she'd seen, drinking the juices she'd drunk, petting the dogs she'd played with. Everything here was so beautiful. Adrian couldn't help but resent himself. If only he'd come here for their honeymoon three years ago—would everything have been different? Gradually, Adrian had circled the whole village. One more slope down, and it was the Aegean Sea. By now, the sun was already setting. Adrian had unbuttoned a few buttons, revealing his muscular chest. Sweat dripped from his forehead. He had seen everything except the Aegean Sea itself. But Adrian hadn't seen any sign of Willow. He felt disappointed... and ridiculous for his own behavior. Maybe Willow had already left. Maybe he'd come too late... Everything was too late. Adrian thought: God, give me one more chance. Let me run into her. Let me tell her I love her. At least give me the chance to say it out loud. He'd never told her he loved her. He really regretted it... He knew what he'd lost—it was his entire world. Just give me one more chance... If I don't run into Willow, I'll leave and completely disappear from her life. Even if she chooses someone else, I'll accept it and let go. So God... Please... give me one last chance. His heart pounding, Adrian took a deep breath. He gathered every last bit of his strength and started up the slope. Suddenly, from up the slope, a red yarn ball rolled down and plopped right at Adrian's feet. Yarn? In this foreign country? Adrian stopped in his tracks. He squatted down to pick up the red yarn ball that had dropped at his feet, and slowly made his way up the slope, winding the yarn back up as he went. Walking up the slope, a slender figure came into view—a girl crouching on the ground, gathering balls of yarn. Clearly, the yarn balls belonged to this girl. The closer he got, the more familiar her silhouette became. But her movements looked a bit sluggish. Adrian felt like the whole world had been put on mute. All he could hear was his own heart—thump, thump, thump—one beat faster than the next, as if his heart was about to jump out of his chest. Was it Willow? God, please... Adrian wanted to call out to her, but his nervousness made his lips tremble. He couldn't even speak properly. He even felt like he might choke up—his nose tingling, throat tight. He'd never been this nervous before. Had he found his entire world? He walked around to the girl's side. "Are... these your yarn balls?" Adrian's voice trembled a bit. The girl looked up. The two of them were connected by a strand of yarn. It was like their relationship—impossible to cut, impossible to sort out... "Thank you so much..." It was her familiar face. Her nose had a bit of a light sheen of sweat, and she seemed to have gotten a suntan. Adrian's heart felt like fireworks exploding—he was so happy. He couldn't describe it. A feeling of his treasured possession being found again after it was lost. He couldn't help but silently thank God! Thank God for giving him this chance! But his happiness lasted less than a second. The next second, Adrian's eyes went wide, bloodshot...
