Adrian rushed off. This time, the situation was serious.
At the newly developed industrial park, the building materials had been swapped for substandard ones. Fortunately, Olivia had discovered the problem during an inspection tour. Since they'd caught it in time, the damage could still be reversed ?it would just take longer and cost more in compensation. But as they say, anything that can be solved with money isn't a real problem.
Everything had been under control. But right after Olivia finished briefing her assistant on follow-up procedures and was about to file the report, an accident occurred.
At the unfinished construction site, piles of steel rebar suddenly fell from above. The scene was horrifying.
Thankfully, Olivia's assistant had pushed her out of the way in time. But the scattered rebar still struck Olivia's leg. As for the assistant... in pushing Olivia aside, he had been hit himself. By the time people rushed over, he was already unconscious.
An accident this severe required Adrian's presence on-site. If the assistant didn't wake up... things would get extremely complicated.
By the time Adrian arrived at the hospital, Olivia's leg was already in a cast. She lay quietly in bed.
"You're here?" Hearing the door open, Olivia opened her eyes. Her face was pale, clearly in pain, but the corner of her mouth held a faint smile.
See? She always found a way to bring Adrian to her side, no matter the cost.
"Mm. Thanks to your quick thinking this time. Get some rest. I'll handle the rest." Adrian made no move to sit down.
Olivia frowned at his obvious readiness to leave.
"My leg hurts," she said, putting on a pained expression.
"Assistant Yan will arrange the best doctor for you," Adrian nodded.
"I still need to check on your assistant. You rest." With that, Adrian left the room.
Watching him leave without hesitation *?without even a backward glance *?Olivia's hand gripped the bedsheets tightly.
Adrian was hers. He would be hers eventually.
When she opened her eyes again, a ruthless glint shone in them.
Thinking of something, Olivia took out her phone and made a call.
After quite a while, the call connected.
"Hello, Willow."
"What is it?" The voice on the other end was numb and cold.
"Willow, I'm so sorry. I know Adrian was vacationing with you, but something really came up unexpectedly today. Did I ruin your trip?" Olivia used her usual tactic.
No response from the other side. But that didn't bother Olivia.
"Adrian probably won't be able to return for a while. Willow, I'm really so sorry," Olivia said hypocritically, though the corner of her mouth curved high.
The other person didn't speak again. She simply hung up on Olivia.
But Olivia felt incredibly satisfied.
After ending the call, Olivia stared at the ceiling, thinking.
What was so great about Willow? In terms of family background, looks, and capability *?what did she lack compared to Willow? She was superior to Willow in every way! She looked down on Willow. Besides being a little younger, what did Willow have?
Willow didn't deserve Adrian at all.
Remembering how Adrian had come to break up with her years ago, Olivia could never forget it for the rest of her life.
Proud as Olivia was, that had been the first time she'd ever been rejected.
That day, Adrian had suddenly called Olivia to invite her to meet. Olivia had been a little surprised *?after all, they'd been dating for so long, and their only "dates" had basically been at the library.
Adrian never took things further. Was he shy? Or what?
And when Olivia had dressed up carefully, waiting for Adrian to arrive *?
He had simply looked at her calmly, with no trace of emotion in his eyes.
He wanted to break up with her.
Olivia had frozen on the spot. Then a woman's intuition immediately made her think of the girl he'd introduced her to the day before... that sister with no blood relation.
And today he had come to break up with her.
How ridiculous *?yesterday she had been trying her best to please that girl Adrian seemed so close to!
"You like that sister of yours," Olivia had said with certainty.
Adrian hadn't denied it.
Olivia felt disbelief, rage, jealousy, resentment, humiliation... every emotion engulfed her.
But she knew that continuing to cling to him would do her no good.
A smart person knows when to step back strategically.
Besides.
Her, Olivia, getting dumped? Not in this lifetime.
So she had decisively agreed to the breakup first, demanding that Adrian keep it confidential *?and that he admit to everyone that she was the one who had dumped him.
Olivia had seen guilt in Adrian's eyes. Good. That was exactly what she wanted.
In the days that followed, Olivia quickly arranged to study abroad.
She couldn't stay here. She felt humiliated.
But during those years overseas, she met all kinds of men *?all shape and sizes *?and not a single one measured up to Adrian.
As the days passed, Olivia felt like a boulder was pressing down on her heart every single day, making it impossible to breathe.
Until one day, she received news.
Adrian and Willow had gotten married.
How could they?
From that moment on, it was as if a monster had awakened inside her, dragging her step by step toward the abyss. She was jealous. She was unwilling. She had once possessed him!
Every midnight, she tossed and turned. She always remembered the envious looks from those around her when she had announced she was dating Adrian. She always remembered how exceptional Adrian was, how perfectly matched they were. She remembered how her family's status had risen along with the tide once her parents learned she was dating Adrian, the heir to the Ashford Group.
But everything had been ruined by that stupid woman! Yes, that stupid, worthless, weak woman!
Although she had returned too late and Willow had already gotten there first, Olivia was confident. With Willow's insecure, hypersensitive nature, she would be far too easy to manipulate.
Her gaze gradually grew cold. She had a plan.
She would reclaim what she had lost, what she had once possessed!
Olivia looked at her leg.
It really should have been more serious.
A phone ringtone snapped Olivia from her memories.
"Hello," she answered.
"Miss Lin, I trust you were satisfied with today's results?" A fawning voice came from the other end.
"Didn't I tell you not to call me unless I contacted you first?" Olivia frowned.
"Yes, yes, but you see, could we settle the remaining payment?"
"Fine. I'll transfer it shortly." Olivia hung up with disgust.
Olivia let out a soft hum.
*Willow. You will have to give Adrian back to me eventually.*
