24. The Quarry

2973 Words

TWENTY-FOUR The Quarry SPRING 966 MC Kasri Ironheart stepped into the tavern, along with Herdwin Steelarm. The place was packed, as one might expect when the marshal was addressing his senior commanders, yet even so, drinks flowed freely. Kasri grabbed a tankard, passing it to her companion before filching another. She took a sip, then made a face. "Not the freshest of mead." "It'll do in a pinch," said Herdwin. "And after the long march from Mirstone, I'll take anything I can get." They'd arrived in Kinsley only last night, putting them two days behind the rest of the army. Now, with the northern forces of Merceria finally combined, they could begin discussions on making a move towards the Weldwyn capital. The general hubbub died down as the marshal took up a position near the fire.
