It seems like I spend most of the day lying there on the floor, but when Joey finally helps me to my feet, I’m surprised to find that the clock says it’s not yet nine. “It’s still morning?” I ask, incredulous. “I’m ready to go back to sleep again.” Before I can fall down on the nearest bed, Joey pulls me into a tight hug. I’m acutely aware of his body against mine, his breath ruffling the ends of my hair, his heart beating next to mine. When I try to push him away, he just holds on harder, forcing me to hug him back. My arms find their way around his waist and I cling to him, afraid that when I let go, he’ll be gone. Planting a rough kiss on his scruffy cheek, I admit, “Nothing’s changed, Joe.
