Author's Note: I'm so sorry for being MIA for a month. This pandemic really did took a huge toll out of my life --in the midst of compiling school works, reaching out to professors, completing my feasibility study, worrying about my graduating status and finishing my internship during corona season, my brain decided to just shut down. Anyways, I hope everyone is healthy and is staying at home -- and hoping that this little update will take your mind of from all of the negativity that is happening today...
Edited version (I wasn't liking some of the lines that I wrote and I ended up editing some of it)
It has always been a daunting thought that I had to be exactly like my mother – a beautiful good natured house wife who supports her husband and family, but that’s a picture she beautifully painted. Within her beauty and smiles lies a cunning a smile and sharp eyes, in one breathe she could destroy a life. That was how she wanted me to be. I played my part in the past, I befriended powerful families and used them for my mother’s advantage, until one day I befriended Louis. He changed me as a person, he gave me the strength to run away and unfortunately I couldn’t give him that one thing he needed from me. We were a product of loneliness, Louis and I – we filled each other’s void.
My mother didn’t like my friendship with him, I became withdrawn from her and her world and eventually, I became less of value for her. She looked at me like I was a chess piece, just like how she looks at me now – I was sipping my wine next to Fletcher as she looked at me from afar. Her stares cold and unnerving that the hair on my back stood up. It was the last day of the annual Ralph’s Sunday brunch and stakes were high for people like my mother who keeps up with their power with in the high society.
“I didn’t know that you were bringing someone, Fletch. You should’ve told me.” A high pitched voice said to Fletcher. Aileen Vanders, I used to be friends with her or rather we benefitted from our friendship.
“Why don’t you bore someone else with your thoughts.” Fletch said nonchalantly to Aileen, he was sipping at his wine. Her face grew red but she remained passive but I knew deep down she’s humiliated.
“So early to be bitchy, do you want me to make it go away.” She smiled seductively at him and turned her head mocking me, I smiled even brighter at her and she flinched. I wanted to laugh but I held myself back.
“Hi, I’m Kim. Fletcher’s wife and you are?” I asked her politely, my smile not wavering. Her eyes twitching as she looked at me.
“Aileen Vanders –“her head snapped back to Fletcher, I held Fletcher’s hand tighter.
“You got married?” she asked incredulously. Fletcher nodded, his hand wound around my waist as her eyes followed his arms.
“We got married last Thursday.” I excitedly said to her. I showed her my ring and smiled like we were best friends.
“What can I say, love doesn’t wait.” He kissed me in the mouth slowly, I held on his neck and smiled when we parted then he kissed my cheek. I didn’t know if they had a past but I’m going to conclude that it didn’t end well.
“I love you too, Hun.” I told him and pecked him on the lips, smiling like an i***t. I turned my head to look at Aileen but she was gone.
“What was that?” I asked him amused.
“Past flame.” He kissed my forehead and held me on his side. I scrunched up my nose.
“I didn’t know you liked sociopath’s” I chuckled to him. Even though Aileen looks like any normal snarky b***h, she’s actually quiet smart. There was a reason why I kept her close to me back then when I was Alexandria.
Fletcher agreed nonchalantly and we proceeded to socialize to the rest of the party.
I excused myself from Fletcher’s business group as they were talking about performance ratings of different headquarters and how it could affect their market sales, they were convincing Fletcher to buy all of the share in that company so they could pick it apart, I tried not roll my eyes as they try so hard to sway Fletch, but he was not budging. He just nodded at them and reasoned out his concerns but they didn’t care. To them Fletcher was a young naïve entrepreneur who just got lucky in life, everyone knows that he was adopted by one of the powerful families in business and what they didn’t know is that Fletcher was a self-made billionaire. I knew a couple of things inside the high society and it wasn’t even a secret that the Kosch family has only one heir and that is Kevin, even though Fletcher is legally a Kosch he would never have a part in the Kosch Industry – just like me.
I was lost in thought as I was standing at the gazebo beside the ocean when someone cleared their thought. I turned around and saw Louis, he was standing at the steps of the entrance his eyes full of surprise. I couldn’t blame him, after the news broke out that I was dead I stopped all communications with him. It was better for him if he thought I was dead, or else he wouldn’t have moved on from me.
Louis and I had a complicated relationship, I knew he like me from the start and I took advantage of it. I thought we were both lonely, why not use each other. He knew our arrangement and in the end I decided that it was better if we stayed as friends, he agreed to it but I know he still loved me. After a week of my disappearance Louis told me that he’ll leave everything in Ney York for me, I told him no, that we would end up resenting each other in the end – we were never meant for each other, I love Louis but not as a woman, I love him for many reasons but those were not enough and I can’t take that away from him.
“Alexandria?” he whispered.
“What – I thought you were dead?” he finally moved walked to me, he was about to hold me but I moved away. I looked at him with confused eyes.
“I’m sorry, this has been happening since yesterday and it’s getting really out of control. I’m not Alexandria, I’m Kim Kosch.” I said to him in an irritated tone. I walked out of the gazebo.
“You can lie all you want Alexandria, but I know you and you can’t fool me.” He said, he was threatening me. But his voice was hurt.
“I don’t know what kind of games you rich people are playing but this is not funny.” I turned to him. Thankfully no one was around, we were both alone at the gazebo.
He laughed at me, I was starting to get pissed off at Louis.
“I was there at your funeral; your parents buried you and cried like they lost their precious daughter.” He laughed again, I would’ve to but I wasn’t planning on getting caught.
“Like they cared about you.” He sarcastically said.
“I almost believed it, Alex.” He stopped laughing, his voice cracking at the end. I didn’t say anything, I waited for him to stop. I turned around and walked out of the gazebo –
“I loved you, Alex.” He whispered. I stopped at the top of the steps, my hands fisting on my neatly ironed Prabal Gurung dress. I thought about all of the times I caught Louis looking at me, I thought it would pass and that in time he’ll move on from me, but seeing him like this made me feel guilty – I thought I had done the right thing, I thought this would hurt less for Louis but it turns out I was wrong – I was so wrong. I squeezed my eyes shut.
“I’m sorry about your girlfriend.” I said quietly and walked away.
I was trying to find Fletcher but he’s not where he was when I left him – I was getting anxious when I couldn’t find him and I just really wanted to go home, after seeing Louis I couldn’t be here and pretend to smile at everyone. I was about to walk in the house when Nick Halden caught up with me.
“Hi Kim, you looking for Fletcher?” he smiled at me like a clown. I knew for a fact he’s up to no good. I pretended to be shock and put my hand over to my chest.
“Oh! You scared me.” I laughed lightly.
“I am, I’ve been looking around for him. I think he might’ve run away from me.” I joked and chuckled at him.
“Who? Fletcher? No, Fletcher’s not like that.” He smiled again like an i***t. I want to punch that smug face of him. My hand formed to a ball squeezing it tight.
“Yeah, he wouldn’t. I would kill him first.” I looked him in the eye very seriously and broke off with a laugh, He laughed nervously.
“So where’s my husband?” I asked him.
“Oh, right I’ll escort you to him.” He walked inside the house and gestured to follow him.
He was talking about the renovation of his house and how he bought it when he was 26 years old. We walked to the second floor; I rolled my eyes at his back.
“You know, you could pass as Alexandria Walt’s twin.” He said smiling at him.
“Then she must be drop dead gorgeous.” I said dryly to him. I saw a couple of framed photo and saw a group photo of my family and Nick, It was when my father invited him to our house to announce his promotion.
“She’s okay. Too prissy for my taste.” He scrunched up his nose, trying to be funny. I wanted to roll my eyes again
“That’s her.” He pointed to me, my hair was brassy at this photo I remember missing my hair appointment the day before that, I was working at my father’s office at that time and I got too busy that I forgot about my hair appointment. My mother was furious at me.
“oh yeah – she look like she’s been holding a fart her entire life.” I said nonchalantly while Nick laughed like an i***t. I knew he’d love that comment.
“You don’t have any filter.” He stated as he was laughing like an i***t I just shrugged at him. He composed himself and while we were walking and then he pointed to a door.
“ That’s where I saw Fletcher.” He said
“Thank you.” I forced a smile at him and went to open the door.
I wasn’t prepared for what I saw, Aileen was on top of Fletcher while he was pushing on her to back off. I knew Aileen’s games, she did this with Louis once when she thought we were going out – she must’ve been shaken when she saw me. I blinked at them and pretended to be shocked, Aileen had a huge smirk on her face.
“Oh my god, I’m so sorry Fletcher. My shoes got caught from the carpet.” She told Fletch in a apologizing way. Fletcher moved away from her and made his way to me.
“It’s not what it looks like.” Fletcher took my hand squeezing it at the process. I didn’t bother looking at him as my eyes swept it’s way to Aileen and her mischievous smile, her challenging eyes didn’t go unnoticed as I smiled genuinely ate her. Her face stunned as I smiled at her in a concerning way.
“I know honey – “I patted Fletchers hand as I looked at Aileen again with the same smile.
“In behalf of my husband’s behaviour I’m so sorry, he’s usually courteous and kind unless were in bed having sex.” I said to her with an apologetic smile.
“ – I hope you have a great week end Aileen.” I smiled at her one last time as I tugged on Fletcher’s hand. I’ve let go of his hands once we were out of eye sight from the two buffoons. Fletcher tugged on my arm but I shrugged it off.
“I’m sorry.” He said.
“I know, but you should’ve been more careful.” I warned him as I walked down the stairs to get away from him.
