Chapter 11: The Offer

447 Words
The snow had started to fall by nightfall, dusting the battlements in pale silver. Lyra stood on the balcony outside her chamber, breath clouding in the cold, staring at the city lights far below. Somewhere out there, people lived without knowing about clans, courts, or bloodlines that could start wars. She almost didn’t hear the voice at first. “You don’t belong here.” Her head snapped around. A man leaned casually against the balcony’s edge, dressed in a dark coat lined with crimson silk. His eyes glowed faintly, too bright to be human, too knowing to be kind. “How did you ?” she began. He smiled. “The wards keep enemies out. They don’t keep me out. We’re not enemies… not yet.” Her pulse kicked up. “You’re with the Crimson Court.” “Sharp,” he said, as if amused. “Name’s Malrik. I was sent with a message, well, more of an invitation.” “I’m not interested.” “You haven’t heard it yet.” He stepped closer, his movements smooth as water. “You’re not safe here, Lyra.” Kael can’t protect you from what’s coming. The Court knows what you are. They know how to help you… control it. Imagine not fearing the next time that power slips. Imagine owning it.” She backed away, gripping the balcony rail. “And in return?” His smile deepened. “Only your loyalty. To us. To me.” The air between them shimmered faintly some kind of glamour, sweet and suffocating. Part of her wanted to lean closer, to hear more, to trust him. “Get away from her.” Kael’s voice cut through the haze like steel. He stood in the doorway, black fire curling lazily around his hands. Malrik chuckled. “Ah, the loyal guardian. You might want to ask her what she felt just now. Power calls to power, Kael. You can’t stop it.” Kael took a step forward, the temperature around them dropping. “Try me.” Malrik’s eyes lingered on Lyra for a moment longer. There was something like promise in them then he stepped onto the balcony railing and simply… vanished into the falling snow. Kael moved to her side instantly. “Did he touch you?” “No,” she said, though her voice shook. But he knew things, Kael. About me. Things you haven’t told me.” His jaw tightened. “That’s because some truths are more dangerous than lies.” She turned to face him fully, her heart pounding for reasons that had nothing to do with Malrik’s glamour. “Then maybe it’s time you trust me with them.”
