Zayne's POV
"What has come over you, Zayne?!" My father yelled.
"Dad, what are you doing out of bed?"
"I got bored. I wanted to stroll around the Pack till I saw this. Why are you hitting her? I am disappointed! I raised you better than this."
"She disrespected me and my mate."
"Mate?" He asked, before laughing wryly. "You don't have a mate, Zayne. You haven't had one in years."
Apparently, that's the one thing he clearly remembered.
Three years ago, just before I was crowned as the Supreme Alpha, my father was diagnosed with veil syndrome. The doctors claimed that there was a shroud over his memories.
No one knew the cause of it, and there were rumors that he was cursed by a witch.
He could barely even remember his family and gets violent sometimes.
He always had nightmares and episodes.
While I was at the Moonstone Pack for the Alpha Ceremony, he had one of these episodes.
His condition made him step down as the Supreme Alpha, and at my young age, I was forced to take over.
"You should go back to bed, Dad." I said, concerned. "Why are you even out of bed?"
"Don't tell me that, Zayne. And why are you hitting a woman?" He asked, turning to face Evelyn. His mood changed immediately as he stared at her. "Who the hell are you? How dare you show yourself in my pack?!"
"I… um…" Evelyn muttered, still bleeding profusely.
Blood still dripped continuously from her mouth, but I didn't care. She was supposed to be healed by now, but my Supreme Alpha abilities made it difficult.
"Answer me!" My father barked and lunged towards her, but I stopped him just in time.
"Relax, Dad. She's a member of our pack."
"She is?"
"Yes, Dad."
"Then why does she smell different?"
"Different? She doesn't sm-"
Before I could complete my statement, her intoxicating scent hit me again.
Chloe. What was she still doing here?
"I know I'm sick, Zayne, but I'm not stupid. There's a stranger in our pack."
"No. In fact, she's my mate."
My eyes scanned around in search of her till I caught her peeking by the side of a wall at the far end corner of the hallway.
I could feel her tense and afraid, but I couldn't meet her just yet. If my father found out where she was, I couldn’t imagine what he'd do. Despite his old age now, he was still extremely strong.
I had to get rid of him first.
"Zayne, you don't—"
"That's enough, Father. You should get some rest."
"But—"
"No buts. You've already stressed enough."
I quickly mind-linked Rose. "My father is here, Rose. Come here immediately!" I ordered.
Not long after, Rose showed. "Alpha, you sent for me." She said, either her head bowed to the ground.
"Yes. Escort my father out."
"As you wish." She said and reached for my father's hand.
As she escorted my father out, I saw her stare at the direction where Chloe hid, but she didn't say anything. She just walked past her.
"Z..ayne…" Evelyn muttered.
For a moment, I almost forgot about her.
"Please… forgive me." She begged.
I rolled my eyes at her. I wasn't going to fall for that again. I've always known Evelyn as a cunning woman. She could go to any lengths to get what she wants, even though her actions would end up hurting someone.
She fed off the fact that I couldn't hurt her, so she got away with everything she did. But her action today was the last straw.
"There's nothing to forgive. This should serve as a warning to you, Evelyn, and I hope you've learned your lesson."
She bobbed her head repeatedly in affirmation.
"Good. We are done. I want nothing to do with you again. The next time I see you near Chloe, or hear that you did something to hurt her, I will kill you, and I surely won't care about the consequences."
I could see the fear in her eyes at my words, and that was already enough. She knew where she stood now.
"Yes, Alpha." She mumbled, bowing her blood-stained face to the ground.
I quickly mind-linked my Beta, Ryder. "I have a mess in the hallway. Come clear it up."
"Yes, Alpha." He responded, and not long after, he came.
"What happened here?" he asked.
"I had to hit her. She disrespected Chloe."
"I thought he was joking. I didn't mean to disrespect her."
"I'm tired of listening to your excuses, Lyn. Just get out of my sight."
"Where do I take her?" Ryder asked.
"I don't care. Take her to the Pack doctor or healer, or you could just as well dump her somewhere. I really don't care. Just take her out of this hallway."
"Yes, Alpha." Ruder said and dragged Evelyn out of the hallway.
When they were both out of sight, I strode towards where Chloe hid, and the closer I came, the more her sweet scent intoxicated my senses.
I could feel her tense even more. She was also affected by my scent.
'She's upset, Zayne. How could you make her feel so sad?' Thor, my wolf asked.
"I didn't mean to make her upset. I was confused. I didn't know what to do or say at that moment."
'I think you should talk to her.'
"Yeah. I'll do that."
I finally approached where Chloe hid but decided to be discreet.
"Well, hello there," I said suddenly.
"Aahhh!!!" She screamed and flinched, clearly frightened.
"Relax. It's just me." I said, trying to calm her down while fighting the urge not to laugh.
"You startled me." She said, clutching her chest tightly. A harsh frown formed on her face. "What are you doing here?"
"I should be asking you that question. What are you doing here hiding in a corner?"
"That's none of your business."
"Very well, then. Now, come with me!" I ordered, grabbing her hands forcefully, and she had no choice but to follow me.
