Chloe's POV
I couldn't believe my ears.
"Fiancée?" I muttered, my voice barely audible.
"Yes, b***h!" Evelyn sneered.
Zayne reached for my hands with caution. "Chloe… please listen to me. She—"
"No!" I yelled, yanking my hands off. "You had a fiancée, and you dared to lie to my face that you are my mate."
Tears spilled down my cheeks again, even when I tried so hard to fight them from falling. From the corner of my eyes, I could see Evelyn smirking widely. She clearly enjoyed this—seeing me weak.
"But… you are my mate, Chloe."
"Bullshit." I murmured with my arms folded to my chest as I turned away from him. "You probably put some sick spell on me to make me believe that."
"That isn’t true, and you know it."
"Oh please!" I blurted, turning to face him again. "You're not even trying to deny it, Zayne! Tell me. Is she really your fiancée?"
"Um… it's… it's complicated." He stuttered.
"Complicated?" I scoffed. "So, she's telling the truth?"
"Of course I'm telling the truth, swine!" Evelyn blurted.
Zayne didn't even try to defend me at all.
"What am I even doing here?" I asked no one in particular, with my voice breaking. "I… I have to go."
"No, Chloe. Wait!" Zayne yelled, but I didn't listen to him. I ran through the hallway crying profusely.
I expected him to chase after me and tell me that all of this was a misunderstanding. But he didn't.
Instead, he stood there, talking in hushed tones with Evelyn.
I stood by a wall, trying to eavesdrop on their conversation.
"Get your hands off me!" He yelled, and Evelyn took her hands off immediately. "What was that for, huh?"
"I was just marking my territory. You shouldn't blame me. Have you suddenly lost count of all the bimbos that claimed that you were their mates? Especially on your eighteenth birthday."
"But Chloe is really my mate."
Evelyn heaved a sigh before placing the back of her palm gently on Zayne's neck.
"What are you doing?" He asked, confused.
"Are you sure you're okay? Did she put a spell on you?" She asked, faking a tone of concern.
"Stop this nonsense!" Zayne said, taking her hands off again. "We had an agreement, Evelyn. I told you that when I found my mate, whatever we both had was over."
"Come on, Zayne. We're perfect together. Have you forgotten? Our parents betrothed us together right from childhood. I am supposed to be your perfect Luna."
Zayne took slow but calculated steps towards her, and his eyes darkened as he spoke to her this time. "Well, that's over now. I have a mate. Get that into your thick skull. I care about you, Evelyn, and that's the reason why I'm still calm about this. I hope you find your mate soon, and I don't want to ever see you near Chloe."
After saying that, Zayne turned to leave, but Evelyn wasn't having it.
"Take a look at her. She's not even worthy of being your mate!" She spat. "She looks like a malnourished maid! She's even too weak!"
"I'm warning you, Evelyn." Zayne said with clenched teeth.
I looked at his sides, and his fists were clenched too.
"What are you going to do, huh? Hit me?!"
"Don't make me do something I'll regret." Zayne warned.
Their voices were raised now, and they didn't even care if people were passing by.
"Who do you think you are?!" Evelyn exclaimed with widened eyes. "Oh, so you think because you're the Supreme Alpha, you can boss me around?! I'm not afraid of you, Zayne. And I don't care if that lousy bimbo is your ma—"
"I warned you, Evelyn!" Zayne snarled as he lunged at her, pinning her to the wall.
A gasp escaped her lips as she didn't expect such a sudden reaction from him.
He pressed her neck hard with his left arm, and she struggled to breathe.
"You can't kill me, Zayne." She rasped.
"Alpha!" Zayne blurted. "From now on, you'll address me by my title!"
"Like hell I—"
"I said, address me with my title!!" He barked, pressing her neck tighter.
"Alpha."
"Good! Now, you're going to apologize to Chloe!"
"I'm not going to apologize to her."
"I gave you an order, Evelyn, and I expect you to follow it."
His eyes turned to a dark shade of copper as he said that.
I could feel his anger so much that it terrified me.
Was he going to kill her?
"I'm not going to do that." She said again, clearly choking. "In fact, I'd rather die than apologize to her."
Zayne chuckled darkly, and his wicked laughter echoed through the walls of the empty hallway.
"So be it then." He said, delivering a blow to Evelyn's face.
She didn't even have the time to retaliate before Zayne delivered another one.
Blood dripped from her nostrils and her already split lip.
Evelyn was powerless before him. I expected her to fight back, but she couldn't.
Zayne continued to deliver fatal blows and kicks, not even caring about the fact that she was a woman.
'Should I intervene?' I wondered.
"No," I mumbled. "This is what she deserves for running her mouth like a parrot.
And so, I continued to watch and didn't even try to separate them.
'We should stop this, Chloe!!' Nyx said.
"How could you even suggest that, Nyx? Have you forgotten what she did to us?"
'But he's going to kill her!'
"I don't care, Nyx. Let him kill her!"
"Zayne! What has come over you?!" I heard an almost wrinkled voice yell, and I turned to face it.
Zayne stopped what he was doing immediately and turned to face it too, while Evelyn, who was almost at the brink of death, managed to keep her eyes open to see who was speaking.
"How could you hit a woman, Zayne?"
I studied Zayne, and his anger slowly faded.
"Father?" He muttered.
