I figured I'd start with something deep for the first chapter. Doing your research!
This topic frustrates me greatly, so, bear with me while I try my very best to go on a tangent with this chapter. The number of times I've read stories that contain fallacious information on various topics such as simple science, mental illnesses, medications, physical injuries, doctors, and mental health psychologists is ludicrous. You're being ignorant and downright not bothering to do the proper research, you are also preventing yourself from becoming well-educated with the fictional characters you're portraying. In other instances, I've seen writers reinforce negative stereotypes and preconceptions that they address so passionately.
As someone who struggles with a mental illness, there's nothing more insulting than reading a book that inaccurately portrays mental illnesses. So be mindful and do your proper research!
It definitely doesn't take that long, and you don't need to go too in-depth with it. Just do research that'll provide you with at least basic knowledge of what you're talking about. However, if you feel that the topic you've chosen gives a bad representation of a selective topic, then, please don't write about it, or find someone who has the knowledge of your selective needs.
By doing your research on your topic, you can develop strong storylines for your characters and find ways to incorporate the research in a way that betters the quality of your storytelling.
My bottom line; do your research. Don't be a fool and don't be ignorant.
