“Do you have work to do today?” I ask my mate. It’s Sunday, so sometimes he disappears, and sometimes he doesn’t.
“Probably,” he says with a yawn as he turns on his side to face me. “But I’m not going to. I’m going to spend my day with you.”
“Can we go to the grove?” I ask with a smile.
He shakes his head and frowns, immediately deflating my mood. “No, I’m sorry. It would be too suspicious today. In a few days, they won’t think anything of it.”
I nod. I know he’s right, but I hate feeling like I have no control over my own life. The pup wiggles and rolls against my hand. I take Joseph’s hand and place it over our son, gently pressing down.
