Part 9

421 Words
*The Haunted House: Part 9* I stood there, frozen in shock, as the figure in the window disappeared. I couldn't believe what I had just seen. Was I still trapped in the house, or was I finally free? As I stood there, trying to make sense of what I had just seen, I heard a faint whisper in my ear. "You'll never know." I spun around, but there was no one there. The whisper seemed to come from the wind itself. I knew then that I had to get out of there, to leave the house and its dark secrets behind. I turned and ran, not stopping until I was back in my car, speeding away from the house. As I drove, I couldn't shake the feeling that I was being watched. I kept looking in the rearview mirror, expecting to see the house or the ghostly woman staring back at me. But there was never anything there. I drove for hours, trying to put as much distance between myself and the house as possible. Finally, I arrived at a small motel on the outskirts of town. I checked in and collapsed onto the bed, exhausted. As I lay there, I couldn't help but wonder if I had really escaped the house. Or if it had just let me go. As I drifted off to sleep, I heard a faint whisper in my ear. "You'll never be free." I sat up with a start, but there was no one there. The whisper seemed to come from my own mind. And as I lay back down, I knew that I would never be able to shake the feeling that the house was still watching me, waiting for me to return. *Epilogue* I never went back to the house. I never spoke of it again. But the memories of that place haunted me for the rest of my life. Some say that on certain nights, when the moon is full and the wind is just right, you can still hear my screams echoing through the empty halls of that haunted house. Others say that if you drive by the house at exactly midnight, you'll see my car parked outside, the engine still running. But I know the truth. The house may have let me go, but it will never let me be free. And as I sit here, writing these final words, I can feel its presence closing in around me, waiting for me to return to the place where my nightmares began.
