Chapter 14 When I woke, the morning was breaking through the bedroom shutters. My eyes were gritty, and although I could’ve drifted back to sleep, coffee and an early morning walk around the old town were more enticing options. The air was already warm, and the narrow marble cobbled streets were full of sounds different to what I was used to back home. There was no drone of cars, no beeping from trucks reversing, no loud exhaust noises. Occasionally a Vespa zoomed by in the distance, but otherwise, the morning was still and quiet with the odd conversation escaping from behind closed doors. All around were creamy marble and weathered brick walls, an abundance of potted greenery and flowers, and religious shrines and offerings round every corner.
